I seem to have gotten a little farther.  It now launches pppd, but
immediately gets a hangup.  As far as I can tell, the machine on the other
end never launches ppp.  I've tried looking at the other end.  It looks
like it is trying to launch pppd, but I can't find anywhere that it is
loggin why it died.

BTW, the other end is running Cistron radiusd with portslave 1.16.  The
logs show the user logged in and PPP starting w/ the IP address of the
modem to which diald is connected.  Then it exits.  It never shows the PPP
link being established.  Windoze95/98 machines connect w/o a problem.
