Actually, because we're dealing with a version of sendmail greater than
8.7, I think you are mistaken. The feature in m4 should still read:
FEATURE(`nocanonify')
To quote from the sendmail source for v8.9.1, (check the
sendmail-8.9.1/cf/README):
nocanonify Don't pass addresses to $[ ... $] for canonification.
This would generally only be used by sites that only
act as mail gateways or which have user agents that do
full canonification themselves. You may also want to
use "define(`confBIND_OPTS',`-DNSRCH -DEFNAMES')" to
turn off the usual resolver options that do a similar
thing.
And on 'nodns':
nodns We aren't running DNS at our site (for example,
we are UUCP-only connected). It's hard to consider
this a "feature", but hey, it had to go somewhere.
Actually, as of 8.7 this is a no-op -- remove "dns" from
the hosts service switch entry instead.
Hence for version > 8.7, nodns == no-op.
Additionally, refering to the Mail-Queue HOWTO by Leif Erlingsson and Jan
Tietze (for sendmail version 8.8.7):
Section 1 of this document will solve the situation, however in
situations where an external DNS lookup would cause the link up, the
link will still be established even if e-mail is just being queued.
The reason is that sendmail wishes to "canonify" host names.
[...]
Add the following line to
/usr/src/sendmail-8.8.7/cf/cf/yourhostname.smtp.mc:
FEATURE(nocanonify)dnl
There might be other subtleties I'm missing with the specific situation
we're dealing with, but to turn off immediate DNS resolution by sendmail
for v8.9.1, "nocanonify" definitely works.
