I remember an extensive explaination of different choices from someone. It
should be in the diald-config-1.2.2 documentation file containing e-mail
correspondance. ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/network/serial/ is
where you can find it, I think. (BTW, I've no clue about how diald-config
works on Caldera.)
