The "bad fcs" message seems to be a manifestation of several possible problems,
which result in an incorrect checksum. Here are a couple I've encountered:
1. you have the pppd "tty speed" option set too high for for your modem;
2. you and your ISP are not agreeing on the set of escape characters to be used
in packets - try fooling with the pppd "asyncmap" option, eg, "asyncmap 0xa0000
