I'm at the same point in getting diald to work.
Last night I got past a chat problem.  So:

a. Are you using the same chat script for diald that you
   are for a straight pppd connection?
   Maybe post that script?

b. What's in /etc/ppp/options?  That's what was broken for me.
   I had a call to chat in there, as well as in my diald.conf.

c. What does your diald.conf look like?

As I poked around I had an xterm sitting running "tail -f /var/log/messages"
so I could see what was going on (although looks like you are already
checking that stuff).

I'll race you to get it working :-)
