For clarity sake you'd better use real devices instead of the modem
symlink.
Diald have problems if pppd is used with particular ppp options
specified in places other than its (diald) config file.
Check to see that:
- the chat script doesn't carry any ppp options (this should already be
the case since you say it contains just 2 commands).
- there shouldn't be any "banned" ppp options in /etc/ppp/options and
/etc/ppp/options.ttySX.
If this is all set, then set diald debug to 24, use debug pppd options,
and see what the debug says.
