I had a similar problem when first starting with diald. I cranked
up the logging, and on a hunch, changed the diald.conf and pppd setups so
that one used /dev/modem and the other /dev/ttyS1. This works, even though
(on my system) /dev/modem is just a symlink to /dev/ttyS1. Why does it
work? Black magic, maybe? <g>

        Subject: newbie problem

I set up the diald and it works fine. But when I use Internet
Explorer to
view a home page, the modem will wait for about 30 seconds and then
dial.
Before the connection is made, IE says it can't connect to a home
page.
It's very annoying. How can I shorten the waiting time for modem?
