You need to modify /etc/ppp/options. This is where pppd will check
for values to override default options. You shouldn't have to make too many
changes; you could probably even get away with a blank file. I'm sure if
you crank the logging of diald up to a sufficiently high level, you can see
the exact command string diald is feeding to pppd, and tune your diald.conf
file as needed.
