Hello,

I encountered a similar problem bringing up ppp on RH 6.1.  It turned out - 
thanks to a RH bug report - that I needed to add "noauth" to the 
/etc/ppp/options file.  It solved both the authentication problem and the 
char-major-108 problem.  Dialup still fails the first time around, but is 
fine thereafter - reason unknown.
