Hi there,

The first packets did not got lost. It just TIMEOUT.

The problem is not with diald but with your analog modem.
Analog modem takes about 15 to 25 seconds to make a connection.
You will not encounter the problem if you use ISDN modem.
ISDN modem takes about 2-5 seconds to make a connection.
