I missed the original message with this line, so maybe I'm way off, but
when I had this problem it was that pppd couldn't look up the IP address
for my hostname. I put my hostname in /etc/hosts and it worked fine.
(After three hours of pulling my hair out and trying to figure out what I
had changed. It had been working and then quit after I made a bunch of
cosmetic changes to the system. Guess what one of them was :-)
