Hello Ian,
I got that warning about the module char-major-108, too.

First I thought that's the reason of my problems, but then I found an
entry in the support db of SuSE, where they explain that this warning is
caused by the pppd, which could support a generic devive (i.e.
/dev/ppp), but this is not yet included in the actual kernel (SuSEs
kernel at least). They just explain that it doesn't matter, there
workaround is:
IGNORE THE MESSAGE :-)

The report is related to the following versions:
SuSE Linux: Version 6.3
Kernel: Version 2.2.13
PPPD: Version 2.3.10

Now I am not sure if in ur case it is a real bug, but check first, I
searched a whole day trying to fix this :-(

cu patrick
