As for actual CF cards, I've used
1. Sandisk - these seem to work the best.
2. Apacer - these work good too and they are cheaper
3. <lots of no-name cards - none of which work quite right>
For Compact Flash Card Readers, I use:
1. Sandisk PCMCIA / CF Adaptor
2. Sandisk Imagemate USB/CF - works great under linux too :)
3. Avantech CF/ IDE adaptor
