However, that is moving away from the argument about what the Linux
API should look like --- and remember, Linux is going to have to be
able to mount existing XFS filesystems and, ideally, access EAs on
those filesystems.

This is exactly why we need something like the attribute-family
concept --- XFS can export an ATR_XFSROOTATTR attribute family which
applications can access if they want to, without changing the
interpretation of ATR_USER attributes and without requiring any other
filesystem to know anything at all about the root namespace concept.
