Sure, this can be done. When the time comes. Certainly not in glibc
2.2. This always was the plan and since the old functions will not be
removed and the LFS interfaces will not be renamed there will be no
compatibility issues. I.e., no programs using stat() will reference
stat64.
The point is this has to be announced a long time before getting done.
All the libraries in common use will have to be recompiled. Headers
have to be prepared to disallow use without LFS (currently the
opposite is try for some of them). The linker can automatically issue
warnings when any of the old interfaces is used.
All this is possible, but not immediately.
