Log Message:
Work-around bug #1287: GUI currently requires empty groups to be
allowed.
The GUI may like to use empty groups, but it does not *require* them.
And I thought we agreed that this change should not be made in CVS.
Sigh. Yes. See the other mail I sent to the list yesterday.
I'm hopeful that we can get the re-architected GUI ready in time for
2.0.6. But, maybe we'll have to wait with that post 2.0.6, because we've
other bugs to chase.
The workflow in the GUI w/o empty groups is so unuseable that I'd rather
have empty groups back in the short-term,
ok, i didnt realize it was so horrible.
my understanding was that instead of choosing an existing group from the
drop-down, one just typed a new group name instead (which honestly
didn't seem so horrible to me).
It is highly non-intuitive, to say the least. I would estimate that 80%
of the people who used it would never figure it out without being told,
or encountering significant frustration. IMHO, that's an 80% failure
rate for the GUI. That seems pretty horrible to me. Since the the GUI
is _supposed_ to be easy to use, that's not too good...
and then fix it properly for
all complex objects shortly thereafter.
But, for the time being, this is the cheapest way of getting it at least
partly useable.
I understand. My concern is that now this change is in CVS a "works for
me" mindset will be adopted.
I understand that concern. But I think that would imply that your
proposal was superior. And, it clearly isn't. Sorry.
You are making a proposal which is a huge amount of new work, incurs
great risk, which in the end will be inferior, and you wonder why we're
not jumping at the chance to implement it.
