Addendum to the AX25-HOWTO

Introduction:
This paper just supplements the AX25-HOWTO of November 1997
with current data as of the above date. There have been new Linux
libraries and kernels developed that have changed the correct way to
install the ax25-utilities and actually, if the stated steps are
followed you destroy the kernel library tree.
By keeping this with the HOWTO you can either mark up your
copy or just mark it to refer to this paper.
3.1.1 The kernel source:
All is current but get only kernel 2.0.36 as earlier and
newer do not work. Do NOT get the "upgrade patch" as it is not needed
with this kernel.
3.1.2 The network tools:
If your using any of the current Linux distributions like Red
Hat version 5.2 you will not need to get new network tools.
4.1 Compiling the kernel:
Since you don't need the kernel patch skip that part of this
section. Configure the kernel with care. It's very easy to make an
error.
4.2 The network configuration tools.
Skip this if your using a current distribution of Linux. The
one you have is fine.
4.3 The AX.25 user and utility programs.
Here it becomes a bit more complicated. If your using the
latest Slackware distribution with the libc5 selected, or any
distribution not now current, follow the HOWTO as written.
If your using a current distribution, and almost all use
libc6 now, you skip this section and do the following:
FTP to contrib.redhat.com and cd to /libc6/i386/ and get the
rpm file with the name ax25-utils-2.1.42a-1.i386.rpm and if not using
Red Hat you will need the application rpm for any Linux. This can be
acquired from ftp.redhat.com
<ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/code/rpm> or any of the many mirrors
for Red Hat world wide.
To apply the rpm package as root type the following:
rpm -i ax25-utils-2.1.42a-1.i386.rpm
and that will in 15 seconds install all the ax25 user and utility
programs! Find 5. and continue there.
Continue with the configuration following those parts of the
HOWTO that pertain to your hardware setup. The very latest stable
kernel can NOT be used until a new libax25 is perfected and a new
ax25-utils is produced.
