It has worked for me between a 486 DX 33 and a 486 DX2 66. It works.
Not so with a 386, as I am compiling kernels for 486 now. But 386 
kernels DO WORK on a 486. DX and DX2 are DIFFERENT clones (made 
somewhere in Asia....)

Try it out.
