Greetings All: I've been floundering for 3 weeks to no avail. I need
some input/comments/suggestions, etc.
Two years running Slackware Sept96 - upped to kernel 2.0.29 and
ax25-utils2.0.12c, first with smail3.1.28 then sendmail8.6.12, happy
as a client invoking POP3 to pickup mail from both the Ham Jnos
postoffice and via dipPPP to my landline ISP.. No local DNS involved,
just /etc/hosts, and /etc/resolv.conf..
The problem started when I desired an update of sendmail8.6.12 to a
newer version that supports FEATURE(genericstable) so I can get the
From: lines and envelope addresses better defined.. I've tried
sendmail8.8.8 and now, 8.9.1, with equal non results.. View my header
to see the problem.
If I compile with NAMED_BIND set to 0, Ham-tcp/ip works fine but
email not.. Set to 1, email works but Ham-tcp/ip doesn't. With
entries in /etc/resolv.conf I can fix this so both work but,
unfortunately, email keys the PTT line four times then gives up and I
can then use sendmail -q to pass the message/s/.. This is not a good
arrangement for sure.. :^).. Using /etc/service.switch set to: "hosts
/etc/hosts" - is fine for Ham-tcp/ip but not for email, unless I
enter the IP address for every email site, which would be counter-
productive.
My lashup shouldn't be complicated, eh? Why can't I fix this? I have
the "bat" book for Sendmail and Hunt's TCP/IP book as well as Kirch's
Linux Network Administrators Guide, plus plenty of FAQ's, etc..
Trouble with the books is little recognition of the existence of Ham
tcp/ip - ampr.org...
Hope the above makes sense and APPRECIATE!!
