How should we have done this as you have compiled the sources on your own?

Did you a "make install"? If so, have a look at the variable $SBIN_DIR in
the Makefile. That is the place to look for the binaries.
Perhaps it is a good idea to try the rpm from our FTP server:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/ham/ax25util-2.1.42a-0.i386.rpm
