Pat, I suggest you use debian's "make-kpkg" tool instead of
making the kernel sources by hand. 

The general idea is

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig ...
make-kpkg kernel_image --revision pat.1

This will compile the kernel and the modules and produce a Debian package
(.deb) file with the kernel in /usr/src, then you should install that 
using "dpkg -i kernel_image*.deb".
