Did you possibly choose it as built-in, rather than as a module?

What do you get if you try:

grep BAYCOM /usr/src/linux/.config

If you want to have baycom as a module, there should be a line like:

CONFIG_BAYCOM=m

You could add this, make dep and make modules again.  With Debian,
make-kpkg is a good way to install (it outputs a .deb package with the
kernel and modules).  It's in the kernel-package package (see the readme
for more details).
