Linux error reports

Am getting a couple of 'beeps' as linux loads.  SYSLOG reports:

error in symbol table input
cannot find map file

Otherwise linux appears to load OK.

Running Slackware with kernal 2.0.33 for the past year and never noticed the
errors until a few days ago.  Could someone advise as to the significance of
these error messages and suggest a corrective course of action?
