Your problem seems very strange indeed. Off-hand I can't think of a reason
for the /proc/sys entries disappearing.
But:

Why do you first set the MTU to 512 with kissattach and then to 256 with
ifconfig? However I don't think that should really matter.

Just a comment: ax25d and netromd are very different both in src code and
in what they do.
