Actually, the problem did turn out to be the particular kernel version,
2.0.33 . Another emailer (thanks Dirk!) suggested that I upgrade the kernel,
and so I revisted doing that ... this time it went smoothly ;) Now running
under 2.0.35 and without having to recompile or reinstall any of the
ax25-utils it is all working properly, and my /proc/sys/net directory is
remaining intact.
Since the utils have been running apparently since 2.0.27 according to
the How-To's and such, I didn't think that would be the problem.
Oh well ... now I *must* recommend that anyone getting into this not
even fool around with anything older than 2.0.35, and as soon as I get
the gumption up I'll try to upgrade to 2.0.36 next I guess. From watching the
list here it seems the dust still hasn't settled on the new 2.2.x
kernel configurations ;)
Anyway, n7xss.ampr.org is up and running here in Phoenix, TCP/IP and
netrom at 1200 baud at least ... now to get smtp working then hopefully
within the next month a 9600 baud port going.
