Try typing "reset" when you get back to the shell prompt and see if that
helps.
The problem is possibly that you receive the "switch to alternate
character set" -character. That happens often here when one reads a packet
bbs message written with the DOS character set (IBM codepage 437) and
someone or something has stripped the 8th bit. The "�" (o-diaresis)
character then becomes the switch character... I wish people would start
to use ISO character sets on packet too.
