You are correct in the fact that it is a non printable character. I
started seeing this several years ago and it still happens today. It
started even before there was a linux version of fbb back when I was using
jnos. If you simply do a cat on a binary file it can corrupt the console
in this manner. To recover from it ( without shutting down the machine )
type reset and hit the enter key. You will not see the correct letters
due to the console being corrupt. I usually hit the enter key before
typing reset due to the fact that you can not see what was on the screen
prior to typing.
