Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 11:19:03 +0100
Hi!
I found a few messages stating that the new kernel DOES support UDMA
with the ASUS P5A.
I have compiled the kernel with default ide dma enabled, checked that
the BIOS has UDMA enabled on both controllers and still get the
following messages:
PCI_IDE: unknown IDE controller on PCI bus 00 device 78, VID=10b9,
DID=5229
PCI_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
PCI_IDE: simplex device: DMA disabled
ide0: PCI_IDE Bus-Master DMA disabled (BIOS) <----------
THIS IS NOT TRUE!
PCI_IDE: simplex device: DMA disabled
ide1: PCI_IDE Bus-Master DMA disabled (BIOS) <----------
THIS IS NOT TRUE!
Any hints on what I did wrong? I could not find anything helpful in the
kernel documentation.
Thanks for the help!
Bye,
Axel

That's a HCF modem , and there's no driver support for Linux at all.
Bring it back and /or get yourself a trouble-free external 56K model.

Hi!
Check the following:
(1) Are al l cards REALLY insertet properly into the slots (no joke -
check it 10 times!)
(2) IBM desktop disks are terminated by default (in contrast to the server
disks, AFAIK) . This means if you change the order of the devices on the
internal cable,
you WILL get a termination problem with the ADAPTEC controllers, if you do
not remove the termination jumper (normally number 6 with IBM disks, check
the documentation).
That is what solved a similar problem for me.
Best regards,
Axel

Hi Mark!
module isdn automatically loads modules hisax. That is what modprobe is
there for.
Use lsmod to see which modules are loaded and which modules use what other
modules:
modprobe isdn
lsmod
Take care,

Firstly, when confronted with the twisted strangeness of variable numbers of
arguments, the problem returns... and he who has not kept his faith strong by
repeated practice shall surely fall to this subtle trap.

If you've got a 2.0.35 kernel (or older I suppose) and you're booting
with lilo, then you gotta add a line like
append="mem=82M"
to your lilo.conf file (and of course then run /sbin/lilo).

Depending from the motheboard, this may or may not work. There are
models that always share one IRQ amongst two or more PCI slots.
Sometimes a BIOS update helps; in some cases, however, you'll
have to change the motherboard to get it working.

Change it to
"Life would be easier if I had searched for the answer at DejaNews"
Hint: mem=82M would do it, but this will drastically reduce your
overall performance due to the built-in cacheing limitation of the TX
chipset you're using. Your system will be running much faster if you
keep the limit at 64MB - or use the rest as a RAMdisk .

To find the IRQ, dma and I/O settings. While you are in Windows 95, open the
control panel and open 'system' icon. In the device manager list click 'my
computer' at the top. Then click 'properties' You can get ALL the IRQ, I/O, and
DMA settings by checking the box for each resource one at a time. Make sure, as
in the case of most sound cards, that you copy all the settings. Many use more
than one DMA, IRQ, and I/O settings. Even using sndcfg, you need to know these
settings as there are more than one for most cards. Just setting it for SB pro,
MPU 401 is not enough without the correct resource settings.

Given that set of preferences I'd probably suggest that you stick with
2.0.x; 2.0.36 (or maybe it is the 2.0.x pre-patches at Alan Cox's
site, I forget) is much better at SMP (where "better" == "less buggy")
than, say, 2.0.30.
I know people will say that 2.2.x has SMP improvements, and I'm sure
that is true but SMP is most useful on CPU-intensive tasks and in the
pure CPU-intensive case (in which system calls are not significant,
performance-wise), those improvements are not relevant. Especially
for a dual processor system than than 4, 8, or more processors.

Holy smoking hard drive, Bat Man! How much memory does each system have
and what tool(s) did you use to perform the tests? I'm sure you know
this already, but most disk IO benchmarks need to be run with a
read/write size twice that of the real memory. Otherwise, you'll just
be testing the in memory transfer rates of the OS.
For example, on my IBM 9ES 4.5 gig U2 drives, if I specify a 128meg file
size to Bonnie, the results are 40 MB/sec block reads. However, when I
specify 256meg, I get a more realistic number around 12.5 MB/sec.

Is this a contradiction in terms. I just upgraded and installed
successfully the 2.2.0 kernel with my avm b1 support built in to the
kernel. (upgraded from 2.035) . I did this specifically for isdn
support of my card. Am I wasting my time here, do I need 2.036
specifically. I would have used 2.036 but I didn't want to have to
download the 6MB. Will 2.2.0 work with available patches?

Subject: Help! My dtc3280A card couldn't run properly under Linux.
Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 13:20:05 GMT
My DTC3280A card is configured as IRQ 11, base address D800h, and works well
under win95 by using DTC3280/3270/3250 driver, but it dosen't work under
Linux by using dtc.o module. The card and the attached devices(MAXTOR LX213S,
CORNOR CFP1080S fixed disks and MITSUSHITA CR-506B CD-ROM drive) can be
recognized, but the disks' partition table is said unknown(FDISK displays
very large begin and end cylinder number, and the problem cannot be corrected
by repartition), and CD-ROM could not be mounted becaue of invalid fs type. I
has tried to set every possible IRQ and base address of the card, and also
tried to low level fomat LX213S with the DTC3280A and AHA2940U card. The
disks and CD-ROM drive works well under Linux when attaching to AHA2940. The
computer seems to have no problem when I installed RedHat 5.1 or Slackware
3.4 when using a IDE hard disk.
My computer is a IBM compatible, which has a Intel 486DX33 CPU, 16MB RAM, a
MAD16 sound card, a Cirrus Logic 5422 display card, a Logitech ScanMan Color
interface card, a IBM 14.4KBPS internal modem, a external ASVD 33.6KBPS
modem, a muli-function card and a GoldStar GCD-R542B CD-ROM drive besides the
SCSI card and devices.
I disabled the floppy controller of DTC3280A(It dose not work after I using a
floppy drive cleanning program), using the multi-function card to attach the
floppy drives and IDE hard disk(I don't use IDE HD normally). And the CD-ROM
drive is connectted to MAD16.
I cannot belive that my DTC3280A card is damaged, not sutiable for Linux. I
wonder where I can download a differnt dtc.o module, or in which program do
some hacking. I will very be appriciated if any one could give me some
suggestion.
By the way, my display card can only work in VGA mode when using the program
that using SVGA LIB, such as seejpeg, zgv, although it's said CL5422 is fully
supported. The card works well when using SVGA XWindow server.
