Dear Steve:
Thks for responding.
I have 64 mb RAM on my machine.
When I hang up the modem, that would esentially mean Netscape is still
running and KPPP. Is that any cause for excessive swapping at this point in
time?
I have only started running LINUX so I am not too sure most the time if it
is the OS or my HW. As this is the first I ever used a >8 GB HDD, ( a 10.2
GB Quantum lct) although during setup there was no no indication of any
disagreement from the OS.
The HW was running fine under WIN NT4 and Win 95 using up to 6.2 GB HDD.

I can't make any promises about that board specifically, but I've had good
luck with the ALSA (http://www.alsa-project.com) drivers, version 0.5.6 or
above, on two computers with recent VIA chipsets (an ASUS K7M and a Compaq
Presario 1200-XL106 notebook). The ALSA drivers are a bit of a nuisance to
install, but work well once configured.

Subject: RHat Linux with IMES CDROM drive (in text)
Date: Sun, 14 May 2000 08:34:59 -0700
Hello.
I just installed Red Hat linux v6.1 and had success. After
installation, the CDRom wouldn't mount, telling me that there is "no
medium found". If the CDR hadn't
been opened since boot, it would find the CDR, however.
My CDR is a IMES 8x drive. Old, crappy machine, but great for learning
linux. (Too small for the NT giants...) :)
Installing Red Hat linux v6.2 has trouble with getting files from the
CDR. It dies at different points.
I have read a little about treating some old ATAPI devices as SCSI, even
though they are IDE. However, I cannot find info on how to do that.
Any pointers?
Has anyone had success with the IMES CDROM?
Thanks for any help,

I've also heard of UDMA/66 difficulties for these chipsets.
Currently, it's not physically possible for disk heads to
get any more than about 30MB/sec off the surface of a disk,
so UDMA/66 is only really beneficial when retrieving data
that the HDD has cached in its buffer. However, I do like
things to be set up properly :-)
The boards I'm looking at are Asus P3V4X and K7V. I'm
probably swaying in the direction of the P3V4X at the
moment, even though PIII CPUs have become more expensive
lately :-/ Win2000 is also said to be more buggy on the
KX133 chipset, but this OS is probably buggy regardless
of hardware!
Many thanks

Thanks, actually I had already played around with mouseconfig and
xf86config... But I also noticed that I was getting a lot of NACKs from my
keyboard (Microsoft Natural running on my USB port). So I disabled USB and
put the keyboard on PS/2. The NACKs are gone, and now the mouse seems to
work a little better. Now I actually have control over the mouse, but the
only problem is that it still goes a little crazy every once and a while...
It was ok at first, then I opened Netscape and the cursor flew off the
screen. It usually comes back in a few seconds. It seems like it is losing
itself on the Virtual Desktop... strange...

Hi there,
Try 'Generic 3-button PS/2'. I have an Intelli Explorer and this settings
works for me. XFree 4.0 has native Explorer support by the way!
Good luck,

However i tried to install Redhat 6.1 into Travelmate 330T laptop, it was
unsuccessful. Installation process shows no error. Problems comes when
installation program restarts the system. It showed an error messages
indicating that there's a GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT at 0000. and also shows
many memory addresses at BIOS level , then it jammed down there!
These error messages were displayed right after the loader displays "BIOS
version 1.2 (Driver 1.9)" message.
i reflashed my BIOS using its latest BIOS version(3.0

Is there anyone know which version of Travelmate 330T BIOS version that is

For me, a KX133 on an Epox 7KXA mb, Redhat installed effortlessly and
everything except sound worked. The sound (built in sound using the VIA
VT82C686A) required me to install the ALSA driver.
I has continued to run flawlessly for a month and a half or so.

I have the Epox 7KXA, and found that sound required the use of the ALSA
sound driver. I even wrote a brief web page on this:

Subject: Problems installing network
From: Steven Bradtke <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sun, 14 May 2000 18:20:11 GMT
I've got a Gateway 2000 P4D-66 that I'd like to use as a firewall machine.
I've got two NIC's, the first an SMC 1211TX, and the second a WD 8013.
They are PCI and ISA cards, respectively. I'm using Redhat 6.1. The SMC
is supposed to talk to my cable modem, and the WD to my internal LAN.
I have no trouble getting the WD card to talk to the other machines on my
internal LAN. I CANNOT get the SMC to talk to anyone under linux.
However, when I install it in my Windows machine it seems to have
absolutely no problem talking to my cable modem.
Now for the weird part of the story. The first time I installed the
system, I managed to get the 1211TX to talk to the outside world, and the
WD to talk to my internal net. Everything seemed fine. I shut down the
machine and went to bed. The next morning, the SMC card can no longer talk
to the outside world through the cable modem. Both the card and the modem
lights blink like crazy, but the network is unreachable. It still works
fine in my other machine when running under Windows, however.
Please let me know if you have any clues about how to resolve this
difficulty.
Frustrated and Mystified,
Steve
