The Raid-HOWTO is very helpfull in this respect. The basic steps are (I
don't take responsibiity for your data).
mkraid raid1 /etc/raid1.conf (after you create the /etc/raid1.conf file)
mdcreate /dev/md0 /dev/hda1 /dev/hda2 (use your names here.)
mdadd -ar (to start the raid device.)
mkfs.ext2 /dev/md0 (to format the raid array)
mount /dev/md0 (to mount the array)

Hi!
As everyone I too have a big problem choosing which card I should use.
I have tested both Riva TNT and Banshee on Win98 and couldn't see
much of a difference in my use... but which is better on Linux? I use
at the moment TNT with XFree86 3.3.3, but is it possible to get
Banshee running with SVGA or any other than VGA16 server?

Subject: Number Nine 334 PCI Video can't configure
Date: 21 Dec 1998 17:45:30 GMT
I have a Number Nine 334 S3Virge PCI video card (8megs VRAM) that I can't get
to submit to my wishes of actually functioning (imagine that!) when starting
XWindows.
When I first run Xconfigurator, is senses the video card as needing the S3V
server, which it promptly (without asking, I might add) installs. It probes
for video memory, but fails, prompting me to enter the value installed on the
card. I have tried 8M (actual amount), all the way down to 256k (Which causes
the Xconfigurator to quit for some reason) with nearly identical results. It
then prompts me for desired resolutions, which I have been entering 640x480
8bit... I figure that's the smallest, and therefore safest bet.
Now, when I launch X, it spits out a series of errors saying it can't find a
screen for a list of resolutions from 1024x768 all the way down to 480x300...
it says it needs a specific HFREQ of a certain number (varies with resolution).
Is this a problem with the S3V server, or is it something wacky with the way
Xconfigurator detects the card? HELP!!! I have been working on this for 3
weeks now, and am just about ready to electricute myself to save myself the
agony.

My system (a notebook with Trident 9397DVD) runs okay with Linux, but
alas -
there's no accelerated version yet. I get 1024x768 and True Color,

Hi, folks!
I've got a Ensoniq PCI Audio card.
I wonder if it is possible to make it work under RedHat 5.1
I have compiled modularized kernel with sound module loading upon startup,
but I can't load any of low-level sound driver modules (I tried sb & sscape).
They all complain "Device busy".
I also tried pnpdump utility, but it only accepts i/o ports up to 0x03ff.
As Win95 tell, my card uses 0xD400-0xD4.. :-((
Could you please give me any further advise ?

Oh, come on now! It's not really that drastic... if you install Linux
first. and later decide you want to install Windows <shiver> as
well... you'll need to boot your Linux system from a floppy, and
re-run lilo. Linux will still be there.

I have already seen that comportement but not after a recompilation of

Operating Systems. I have both OSes on the same disk, the machine being

but there is no problem with multiple drives whatsoever. I had various

Can anyone tell me if the IBM PCI Token-Ring Adapter is supported by RedHat

Our company has standardized on this card and I'd like to put a Linux box on

Will this card work with Linux?
Will I have to do anything special to make it work?
If I can't make this card work...what token ring cards DO work with Linux?

I have found in my experience that X doesn't work with trident cards. I
have a 9650 3D and the screen goes blank every time I start X. I have found
two more people with the EXACT same problem on this newsgroup. If you are
able to configure your system with this Trident TGUI9680-1 chip, please
mail me the config file or post it here.
No, but getting the 'modelines' right isn't always easy. I have a TGUI9685
with a Sony 100ES, and i have it working at the Sony specified resolution,
albeit not currently in 16 bit mode at 1280x1024 (which i thought i had one
a previous monitor??). It was a major hassle to get everything to work,
and it's still not quite right.
The screen going blank usually means the monitor is rejecting the scan
rates you've supplied it. And it can get confused even at 640x480
sometimes. Use c-m-<keypad +> to step through possible modes for your
monitor before you suggest that X doesn't work; it may be just not
working at your default screen resolution. Look at the output from
'startx', write down the modes (horz, vert, and dot clock) that don't
work and go through XF86config and comment out the modeslines which
don't work for you. Keep trying until you find ones that work or
'startx' can't find any usuable modelines for the screen resolution(s)
you are interested in. Then, you can say that this video card doesn't
work with that monitor; not necessarily that the video card doesn't
work, or the monitor doesn't work.
I believe getting X Windows configured properly is one of the major
stumbling blocks which prevents or discourages people from running
LINUX effectively, or at all.
-- Tovar
P.S. No, i'm not just a complainer. I'm still looking for the answer
to how to set the dot clock from inside an X program (an 'xvidtune'
re-write) to make this job a little easier.

I am using Debian 2.0.29 on a 48633 clone.
I have two network cards to choose from, Linksys Ether16 LAN Card that includes
a setup disk for Windoze or an Artisoft AE-2 or AE-3 (auto detected by Windoze).
Is there any support for these ethernet cards under Windoze? (I am assuming the
Artisoft is ethernet, just not positive, an old card laying around).
If there is no support for these under Linux is it possible I can write a device driver
for one or the other? I would guess the Linksys Ether16 LAN Card since I have
the most documentation on it (the Windoze setup disk) that I can probably figure
out what it's doing.
Any help would be appreciated, since I'm trying to connect my 2 boxes together
(Win95 and Linux box).

You are wrong.
There is no such thing as identical processors, you kan purchase
your cpu's months apart, and as long as your stepping numbers are
identical you will be just fine. Theoretically the closer to exact they
are the better, say incrementing serial numbers, but same stepping number
is all that is required for SMP. That had to be corrected. later
