I've got this to work by downloading from Creative the dos version of
the PNP manager. I changed the IRQ to 7; which the manager gives you an
error but it did change it. I then rebooted the system out of dos and
reran the sndconfig (which creates an ISAPNP.conf file). I then rebooted
again and voila! Everything works fine.
Now I originally did IRQ 9 and there wasn't a conflict with the
soundcard but the DMA had problems loading the MIDI object file. When I
changed it to IRQ 7 everything worked fine.
Do check your IRQ's on your system to make sure that IRQ 7 isn't used.

You also have to edit your "halt" script. Under RH5.2 this is
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/halt". You have to add the "-p" option to halt when it is
called during shutdown.

Subject: Help! cdrom/sb/floppy setup problems!
Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 16:25:30 -0700
Hi,
I am setting up the SUSE6.1 and the following problems really give me
headache:
1. The system never mount cdrom and floppy drive automatically and
successfully at startup. So I need to umount and then mount both of them
manually everytime. So what file should I edit so that the system will do
that at startup?
2. I cannot setup my Sound Blaster 16 compatible sound card. I installed
RedHat 5.2 on the same machine before and it just work perfectly. But when
I remove the comment on the /etc/conf.modules on the sb.o part and reboot
the machine and check using lsmodule, I found that the sb.o is never loaded.
Even I type:
#/sbin/modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=5 dma16=1 (which are all my correct
settings about that hardware)
I still cannot get the sb.o to be loaded. So what should I do to load sb.o
and make my sound card works?
3. I connect the linux box as a client to a WinGate proxy on a WinNT/98
multi-boot machine. My question is how to get the micq works in this
situation? I tried gtkicq and it cannot find the proxy. (Wingate has SOCK5
proxy)
4. Is there any media player in linux that can play .dat files? I have VCDs
in this format but cannot find the player.
All suggestions are welcomed.

Hi,
I have a problem running audio files on my suse 6.1 system with my Roland
Rap-10 soundcard. Midi files run okay , but I can't figure out the audio
part and can't find device drivers for my card so that I can use midi and
audio.
Can someone please help me.

Subject: SCSI ZIP problems once again ...
Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 21:55:29 +0200
Hi again ...
now my SCSI-ZIP-drive is detected correctly and I can mount the
drive easily ... I can even browse the directory on the ZIP-disks,
BUT when I try to copy data to/from the disk the copy-program
locks up completely. I cannot terminate the process with kill -9,
I cannot unmount the ZIP from that point on (device is busy).
And fdisk -l also locks up (and so does YAST)...
What could be wrong ???
I am using Kernel 2.2.10, pcimcia-modules (pcmcia-cs-3.0.13) and
an adaptec 1460-SCSI-PCMCIA-adapter. and SUSE 6.2-Linux.
Thanks in advance (I don't want to load WINDOWS just to access a
silly ZIP-Disk...)

If it is a win modem it will not work. The only way to find out is to
try to get it to work.

Subject: Microsoft PS/2 Compatible Mouse initialization?
Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 17:10:40 -0700
I have a 1993 vintage Dell 50 MHz 486 I wanted to get some more mileage
out of with some other
brand X operating system. The system has a PS/2 port and its
Microsoft brand PS/2 Compatible Mouse (supplied with the computer) works
very smoothly with DOS games, Win31, Win95 and NT351. With the other
OS, I find the cursor-mouse connection to be rather jumpy - it is hard
to position the cursor with any certainty. But if I swap mice with a
PS/2 mouse from an HP computer, my system works fine. I placed some
trace code in the low level mouse drivers of my system and have found
the cursor's jumpy behavior is truely reflective of erratic data from
the Microsoft mouse and not from the HP mouse. Since the Microsoft
brand mouse works fine with Microsoft software, I'm wondering if there
is some initialization sequence the Microsoft mouse needs to put out
good data. My system IS able to initialize and use the other PS/2 mouse
just fine but has trouble with the Microsoft-brand unit. Where does one
find such information? A search of the Microsoft Knowledge Base turned
up nothing.

Greetings-
I had the same problem with the SiS530 card. So I took your advise,
downloaded the latest SuSe SiS X server and changed XF86Config. When I ran
X I got a display that is too small, but at least it is something. When I
ran startx I got an error message saying none of the devices were defined
and the server was killed.
Would you send me a copy of your XF86Config file? Thanks a lot.

In etc/X11/ you have a .conf file (I can't remember the damned name -
Sometimers Disease) that maintains your X settings. edit this file and near
the end place a # symbol in front of the lines that say VIRTUAL. That will
keep you from having more desktop than fits on your screen. At least in RH6
it will.
hope that helps

I see the same symptoms when I'm working on the console, in
X and I switch from a window with Netscape email on it to a
window with the Netscape browser. If I try to click and
drag across the url in the location box that when I see the
same kind of hard freeze. The only thing to do is a
