The hardware HOW-TO mentions that among others, the following chipset

Can somebody list some ratil brands that are based on these chip sets?

Subject: AWE32 on non-PNP system
Date: Wed, 30 Dec 1998 04:21:24 GMT
Howdy all. I'm installing RedHat Linux 5.2 on a "new" system, actually
a mighty 486/33 with 16MB RAM.
Installation is going fairly smoothly. I installed RH5.2 from floppy
by booting an FTP install, running a FTP server on one of the Win98
machines on my home LAN, and FTP'ing the files over than LAN. That got
it up and running. Figuring out PPP took me a little while, but I have
a working Internet connection.
My question is this:
I've been reading the FAQ's and HOW-TO's and cannot get the MIDI
playback on an original AWE32 (CT2760) card to work. The system is an
old (1990 BIOS) 80486/33 that I'm almost positive is not plug-n-play.
..au audio playback works through the SB16 settings. I've told Linux
that the card is an AWE32 using IRQ 5, DMA's 1 and 5, I/O 220 for the
audio, I/O 330 for MPU, and all the default settings.
PNPDUMP reports "no devices". I've entered the settings manually into
/etc/isapnp.conf but ISAPNP won't load them.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 23:36:52 -0500
All,
Some (complete) newbie help, please. I'm attempting my first install of
Linux using RedHat 5.2. The pc is an older Packard Bell pentium 75, model
106CDT. I've installed a Number Nine GXE w/ 4 meg video ram, and this setup
was working fine for Win'95. When trying to run Xconfigurator, it seems to
probe & only find the onboard video card, a Cirrus Logic w/ 1 meg video ram.
A few questions:
-Does anybody know how to physically jumper the onboard video OFF? I've
tried Packard Bell support to no avail.
-Can I force Xconfigurator to "keep looking" to find the second card? Am I
right in thinking that it just stops after seeing the onboard card?
-Am I giving you enough info? Sorry, this is my first post here & I'm not
sure what info would be relevant.
I've gotten by this problem for now by pulling the #9 card & using the
onboard video, which works fine for 800x600 with 8 bit res, but I'd
obviously like to use the better card if possible. Any suggestions or
pointers to appropriate websites would be appreciated.

Is it worth it? Absolutely. My first Linux install was onto a 486SLC
33 MHz laptop. 8 megs RAM and a 120 Mb hard drive. No CD, so I had to
use floppies. Don't know if Red Hat has the floppy option, but
Slackware does. Or if you really want Red Hat, I've heard that it can
do a NFS install.

As far as where they are, try "locate rc.inet" and "locate
resolv.conf". This is presuming that "updatedb" has been run as root
recently. rc.inet1 and rc.inet2 are the boot time scripts that
initialize your networking daemons and hardware. resolv.conf I'm not
sure, but I believe it has to do with internet nameserver resolution, or
some such thing.

First of all you should always do the research before buying CPU's. The normal
AMD K6-2 sits on a Super Socket 7 running at 100MHz. This means that most
normal socket 7 motherboards will not work with the chip. However, about two
weeks ago AMD announced the release of the K6-2 for the 66MHz bus systems. The
information can be obtained from AMD's web site. You might want to concider
buying a new motherboard any how, since there are many new improvements since
the older Socket 7 motherboards.

First of all, what the heck are ya gonna do with 7.5 GB's of space with
Win98??? Backup any critical data and then re-partition your drive. You
could buy a copy of partition magic (supports linux partitions ext2).
Or you could just blitz everything and start over. Do NOT use FAT32,
use FAT16 for the Win98 partitions and keep them at 2048.
Create two Linux partitions using the boot disks. One swap partition
and one big partition for all things Linux. Leave yourself some extra
space unpartitioned so you can add to either Win98 or Linux as the need
arises.
When configuring you're network for the FTP RH installation, make
certain of your IP settings. IP Address, Hostname (this one's
important), DNS servers, etc. I was able to do an FTP install with a
cable modem but you are going to want an FTP server that isn't bogged
down. Try one of the mirrors.
Alternative:
Create a FAT16 partition and download RH Linux 5.2 to the FAT16
partition, then boot from diskettes and choose the Install from Hard
disk: Follow these directions as they helped me:
(credit Hy Vu for these: hy vu <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>)
1. Download 'mv' for Linux and save it under RedHat.
2. Keep install Linux till 'error opening directory'.
3. Hit Alt-F2. goto Linux prompt
4. ls /tmp/hdimage -> should be something here.
5. umount /tmp/hdimage
6. mount -t vfat {devicename} /tmp/hdimage -> mount to your RedHat
drive
7. cd /tmp/hdimage/RedHat
8. ./mv rpms me # Don't forget the ./
9. ./mv me RPMS # Don't forget the ./
10. cd /
11. umount /tmp/hdimage

CD-R/RW drives are ideal for this purpose, as it gives you a simple
medium to store the downloaded installation files. Yes they are
expensive but I found a heck of a lot of uses for them. The media is
cheap, so I back stuff up on them. I make my own music CD's, I put all
my floppy install sets on them, etc., etc.

No. However I have seen a couple of defective 300's that exhibited
this behavior, which needed to be returned. Dealers don't like to
take CPUs back, and I can just imagine that some of them will blame
whatever part they didn't sell you. :-)
AMD's web site (www.amd.com) lists motherboards that have been tested

Subject: IRQ problem with RedHat 5.2
Date: Wed, 30 Dec 1998 08:25:06 -0500
Here's my problem. I have installed RedHat 5.2 on a Micron Millenia 400
Mhz. The network adapter I'm using is a ISA NE2000 clone manufactured by
D-Link. After disabling PnP in the BIOS and on the card itself (and
setting the card to use IRQ 5 and IO 0x340), RedHat was able to find the
network adapter, and network services came up. Subsequently, I decided
to enable sound, which is supported on this machine at the hardware
level through a CS4236B chip. Sndconfig found the chip and configured it
successfully, but when I rebooted the machine networking was lost,
because the system couldn't find the NIC. When I looked at
/etc/conf.modules, it indicates that there are two NICs, the second one
assigned to IRQ 11, and the sound chip, the CS4236B, has been assigned
to IRQ 10.
Here are my questions:
(1) If I comment out the appropriate lines in conf.modules concerning
the sound chip and the second NIC, will the OS find the network adapter
at IRQ 5, etc.?
(2) If I enable PnP on the card, will RedHat find the NIC at IRQ 11?
(3) Would all of this be solved by using a PCI adapter?
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a feeling you're dealing with a 2940U2 host adaptor. This is listed

A Travan-5/NS20 or DDS-3 mechanism will give you 10/12GB uncompressed,
respectively. As long as it has a standard SCSI interface and you have a
supported SCSI card, any tape drive will work with Linux (AFAIK).

I hate to be a dick, but it would take a book to answer the above
question. Please try to do some of the basic research yourself before
asking others to do it for you. Try doing some reading at vendor web
sites and in the DejaNews archives of some of the five storage
