Gee, I do that all the time since recent 2 gig SCSI drives are so
thin and small!

I tend to use slimline external SCSI cabinets because they
plug in easily, but there are removable drive bays available too.
The more advanced Compaq servers have hot swap drives like those
found in RAID cabinets!

I had a machine with a Phoenix Bios which, while it wouldn't correctly
compute the size of the drive, would accept entry of the proper number
of cylinders, sectors, and heads for a 4.3 GB drive (without logical
block translation of course). While the Bios insisted the drive was
1.8GB, Linux saw it correctly (i.e. the Bios, while befuddled,
faithfully reported the geometry numbers at boot).

Alternatively, I believe you can specify the drive geometry at the lilo
boot prompt as hdx=cyl,head,sect where x=a-h, etc..

I tried that one.(e2fsck) and it would do it, (it asked me to do fsck when
attemting to mount)
I created an extended volume and from that I created a logical volume.
i.e. : sda1 is extended
        sda5 is logical volume

after I booted the system for the first time (after connecting the new disk)
the fstab was strange and all the other disks I had were offline and
un-accecable.

if the new disk is on scsi ID#3, the device should be sdc5 or something
else? like sd?# ?
any idea?

Does anybody know how to configure XFree86 to make it work with a #9

A great chip , not so ?
goto www.xfree86.org and get the latest version (3.3.3) install it on
the system using the super simple instruction found inside (you don't
need to d/l all of it, you can skip the PC98 and the servers dirs)
after that run XF86Setup and choose not to keep your old settings, and
configure your systems the way you know it should be .
notice - make sure (in video card details) to turn off video memory
probing. instead specify the amount of memory you have on the card,
otherwise it will probably not work (I'm not sure, it didn't for me.
specify 16MB instead of probe, fixed all the problems)]

Is there a way to upgrade the Sparc 1+ ROM?

Perhaps someone will decide to put NT inside an aircraft control system.
(I know, but if they can do it for ships, they can do it for planes).
Imagine a Lockheed Galaxy flying over Seattle, the BSOD, and the plane
crashing on the HQ of a well-known company...

I also bent my head on this one. Read the Serial-HOWTO, repeat read the
Serial-HOWTO. Apply
as many times as needed. In my case it took about ten applications cause on my good
days I am a
bit slow :-)

Having said that, here is my inittab entry:

S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/uugetty -d /etc/conf.uugetty.ttyS1 ttyS1 F115200 vt100

Here is my conf.uugetty.ttyS1

# /etc/conf.uugetty.ttyS1
#
SYSTEM=zero
VERSION=`/bin/uname -s -r`
LOGIN=/bin/login
ISSUE=/etc/issue
INITLINE=cua1
TIMEOUT=60
HANGUP=YES
INIT="" \d+++\dAT\r OK\r\n ATH0\r OK\r\n
# waitfor string... if this sequence of characters is received over the line,
# a call is detected.
WAITFOR=RING
# this line is the connect chat sequence. This chat sequence is performed
# after the WAITFOR string is found. The \A character automatically sets
# the baudrate to the characters that are found, so if you get the message
# CONNECT 2400, the baud rate is set to 2400 baud.
#
# format: <expect> <send> ... (chat sequence)
CONNECT="" ATA\r CONNECT\s
DELAY=2
DEBUG=010
# uncomment this for debug output
#
# END /etc/conf.uugetty.ttyS1

Here are some of the block head things I did that caused me to cry:

1. Not using the conf.uugetty.ttyS1 file
2. Incorrectly specificing the conf.uugetty.ttyS1 file
3. Ignoring the advice on how to configure the modem with AT codes
4. Ignoring the advice on not using the S0=1 entry, the modem does not need to be
told to answer the incoming call

regarding your error message I had the same message, it was caused by not
specifying the conf.uugetty.ttyS1 file. As
soon as I corrected that mistake the system worked perfectly.

Try "Xconfigurator" to probe the video.
Try "sndconfig" to probe the ESS board.

I have the same stuff in my Compaq Presario, and I was able to pick the

Hello all.. I am experiencing some trouble getting a D-Link ISA Ethernet NIC
to work under Slackware. I just upgraded to 2.0.34 kernel. I cannot seem
to get the driver initialized. When I try a 'insmod ne.o' I get:
'kernel_version needed but cannot be found'
I have read EVERY HOWTO and FAQ that I can FIND, I have done web searches,
etc. I cannot get this damned NIC to work. I would really appreciate some
help from the experts on this one.. Also, after I completed an upgrade to
2.0.34, I can no longer mount FAT filesystems or ISO9660 (CDROM)
filesystems. When I attempt to mount one of them, I get 'this filesystem is
not supported by the kernel' and it tells me to check /proc/filesystems.
Both 'msdos' and 'ISO9660' are present in /proc/filesystems, but I cannot
mount them.

I would appreciate any help. If possible, could you CC any replies to my
e-mail.. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks in advance for the assistance.

I have been using HP5L and HP6L with little difficulty. Postscript
conversion is handled through ghostscript and apsfilter. Even printing
the occasional jpg file (Santa Clause images) using xv produces excellent
results. Printing is at 600x600 dpi. They also have scaleable fonts which
is very nice.

It also has quite a small footprint. Printing with the HP6L approaches
6 pages per minute.

The Printer cost is about $ 500.00 CDN.

I have had some serious problems with the service life of Brother print
drums, and I've seen reports from others with similar-sounding problems.
They work great when new, but die at an expensively young age. Perhaps
Brother has fixed this problem by now?

I doubt that you *have* to have a printer that can do PostScript, though
it wouldn't be bad, just more expensive. Any printer that can emulate
a standard LaserJet PCL 5 or higher (for better resolution) should be
adequate -- Ghostscript should get you excellent PostScript emulation.
I've been looking at the HP 1100, though its grayscale may not be the
best.

Subject: Re: need to take action on the Winmodem problem
Date: Wed, 30 Dec 1998 17:23:46 GMT

My 2 cents worth. . .

1. As someone who has been working with both Windows (mostly NT 4.0) and
Linux for the last few years nothing amazes me more than the general Linux
communities reaction to WinModems. The attitude seems to be "They have the
word Win in there name therefore they are evil. . . ". It is the exact type
of thinking they blast from the Microsoft camp for. The Windows people say
"if it's not made for Windows it doesn't matter because only these freaks who
use Linux want it". Now it seems the Linux people ae starting to say "if it
is made for Windows users it doesn't matter because its made for those money
hungry, monolopistic, M$ people". Very interesting how times have changed.

2. OEM's are definetly using WinModems more and more...and I would not be
suprised if 4 out of 5 WIN98 PC's out there have WinModems in them. Why is
this important for Linux? 2 reasons. One is pretty simply, people buy these
boxes, delete WIN98 and install Linux. The other is the bigger problem for
Linux IMHO. That is "most" Linux users seem to start out with older PC's
(read as 2 plus year old). What happenes in 2 or 3 years when all these
"old" PC's have WinModems? Do you really expect the Linux beginner to either
know the modem is a WinModem and therefore won't work -or- go buy a new modem
just so he can "try" this great new OS?

3. This is the HUGE problem IMO. I belive people get more fustrated with
modem/WinModem problems than any otehr issue with Linux. If they can't get
to the Internet they get REALLY pissy and are very likely to drop Linux and
go back to Windows. If you don't belive me just check out any of the Linux
groups. By far the largest amount of questions are regarding modems and PPP
connections. Do we (the Linux camp) really want people switching back to
Windows just because they have a WinModem?

What can be done? Well, getting support for Linux from a 3Com and having
them supply Linux drivers for WinModems would be a HUGE step in the right
direction. But I suggest that anyone willing to go down the road of getting
3Com to do this send email to the MARKETING/SALES office....NOT Tech.
Support. Mention things like the millions of Linux users out there, and the
dollars that could be made by becoming the "default Linux Modem Company".
The one thing Linux could learn more than anything else is that, like it or
not, Marketing/Business people make decisions that can correct this problem
- not technical people. This is something we all seem to forget.

BTW, I sent a email to 3Com tech support on my problems with a jumperless
modem (not a WinModem) and Linux and got very little response. I sent the
same complait to the sales office and they swapped me a "jumpered" modem
within a few days. It can be done. 3Com will listen. You just have to get
to the people making the business decisions.

I really believe this is a business/comsumer issue more than a technical
issue.

I have a Boston Acoustic Digital Media Theater speaker system that
consists of two satellites and one subwoofer. I am unable to get any
sound through these speakers at all in Linux. Sound works just fine
through headphones, but nothing comes through the speakers. The
speakers work fine in Windows. I've had the same problem under kernel
2.0.36 and also in 2.1.132. I have set the mixer channels to their max
values, and still am unable to hear anything. I have gotten a similar
Boston Acoustic speaker system working perfectly on another Linux box
with the same sound card (ES1371). What could be wrong with my setup?
Thanks for any info.

compliled the kernel many times but no luck.

Any help in this matter will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
