Subject: How does read number of insertions of a DAT tape?
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 22:48:52 -0500

In reading about our HP 34780A DAT drive, I found that a tape
that has been inserted more than 99 times is rejected and not loaded.

The technician on HP's Customer Support Forum said the number of
insertions is written at the beginning of a tape and is updated each
time the tape is inserted and, yes, the drives reject a tape that
has been inserted more than 99 times. He said he knew of no way to read
the number of insertions off the tape.

This, however, seems to me to be a significant problem if one looses
track of how many times a tape has been inserted!

Does anyone know how to read the number of insertions off a DAT?

It's not guaranteed that an external modem is not a winmodem (and thus
likely to only work in windows). I've seen external winmodems before.
You need to make sure it's not a winmodem (if they mention "designed for
windows" on the box, it's a winmodem probably), or otherwise check for
the winmodem support in the hardware howto on www.linuxdocs.org
Sadly enough the easiest way to know if your modem is a regular modem is
still checking the price tag. They are generally more expensive. But in
return you get a real modem, instead of a front-end to your cpu that
drains time away from more usefull stuff, like animating all those XXX
movies ;-)
As far as I know (but it's been a while) ISA modems are generally no
different from external modems to setup. I don't remember the details,
but I managed to set it up on my very first install of linux, back when
I knew absolutely nothing of *nix, so it can't be that hard.

good luck,

It looks like the specs you were using are way off base since this
appears
to be a maximum 800x600 when new. with age the electronics could be
tired
(no, really, poetic license but true). the model nbr is different but

probably insignicant and anyway this one is lower spec so safe to use.
You don't say if standard vga comes up ok? It should unless you are
picking too many modes from the start to try.. I suggest pick only
basic
vga 640x480 and basic vga monitor and go from there. picking some of
the higher level modes and/depths can drive the card/monitor too much
since the server always picks the highest frequencies it thinks are
usable (as provided by you). Try one mode at a time and expand on the

monitor settings a little at a time. The flicker may mean you are
trying at too high a color depth which brings the card's vertical
refresh rate down. Good luck.

Regarding the startup screen- I am not familiar with turbolinux but
the standard way is it is set in /etc/inittab which you edit at your
own adrenaline pumping breathlessness. You could end up not being
able to boot. The line to look for reads quote id:5:initdefault:
unquote. Change the 5 to 3. 5 is X startup, 3 normal multiuser
terminal-command line, 1 is single user, 0 and 6 will cause you
fits and much creative cussing. 2 is souped up 1. single 3. Pls.
note distributions vary but you are always safe with 1 and 3.

Alternatively when the bootup screen comes up hit the tab key real
fast. This should bring up the lilo prompt assuming lilo is used.
And type in Linux 3 or whatever options the lilo prompt shows.
This may need some experimentation with the tab key timing etc.

You will need to be root to make changes.

The 3Com509B is an ISA card without jumpers (yech!). Therefore, you need
to set the IRQ and I/O values for the card somehow. You can download a
DOS setup program from 3Com's website--it's called 3c509x2.exe. You'll
have to run it under DOS, where it will extract itself into a whole mess
of files. The only one you need to care about is 3c5x9cfg.exe. Run that
program, follow the menus, and set the IRQ and I/O of the card to known
values. Make sure these values don't clash with IRQs that Linux is
already using; ISA cards are very bad at sharing interrupts.

Copy the 3c5x9cfg.exe to a bootable DOS disk just in case you ever have to
set the card's IRQ again.

Boot Linux. "modprobe 3c509 irq=X" where X is the IRQ you assigned to the
card earlier. Voil.

it shouldn't be anywhere near as all that. all i had to do was add the
lines

        alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
        options ide-cd ignore=hdd

to my conf.modules file, add the line

        append="hdd=ide-scsi"

to my linux image section of lilo.conf, add the line

        modprobe ide-scsi

to my rc.local, change the symbolic link to /dev/cdrom1, rerun lilo, and
reboot.

i have a HP CD-Writer+ 9300i as well, and i'm running Red Hat 6.2.

I just posted a new RedHat 6.2 Installation kernel and config files for
those interested in NCR Microchannel (uniprocessor)systems using NCR
53c94/53c710 or BusLogic BT646 SCSI host adapters. The kernel contains
minimal networking using some 3Com and SMC MCA adapters. The drivers are
in zipped form found at
ftp.dgmicro.com/incoming/RH-62-MCA-53c94-MCA-53c710. Sorry about the long
name but I didn't want this kernel confused with the non-microchannel NCR
53c710 adapter. This was compiled for i386 so even the older 386 machines
may still have some life. Good Luck!

Here's a bit from the readme.txt included in the ZIP file:

RedHat 6.2 Microchannel support for NCR/Buslogic SCSI Adapters

This kernel contains Microchannel SCSI support for the following adapters:
NCR 53c94, NCR 53c710, and Buslogic BT646 controllers.

.bashrc is read when the user who has that .bashrc file logs in. For
RedHat, if you want the setserial command to be executed when the computer
boots, you put the command in /etc/rc.d/rc.local . HTH, HAND.

Yep. Got one of those, too.

To all:

I am trying to get my Thinkpad 701c going with Linux. I have
the Red Hat 6.0 distribution, a CSC Fastcache PCMCIA SCSI-II
controller, and a Media Vision Reno CDROM. The CSC controller looks to
be an unsupported card and I was wondering if any one has any ideas for
me. Thank you.

Thanks. RedHat 6.2 auto installation will recognize C-Media chipsets. However
the sound quality is terrible

Hehehe... he got it!

Yahooooo! No, not the web portal.
I got RH 6.2 to boot up!
Apparently, when the install of 6.2 saw my motherboard being
dual processor capable, it loaded the kernel for SMP. But if
I hit "Tab" key as soon as the LILO prompt comes up, then it
shows two choices, "linux" and "linux-up", and waits at the
boot prompt. Type "linux-up" and it loads the kernel for
uni-processor.

Everything, so far..knock on formica, works great.
startx gives me Gnome with Enlightenment desktop, 1280x1024
res. NIC is recognized and ping to my lan shows 0.7ms
response, gateway thru my WIN98 with ADSL is set, ping out
works, and Netscape browses..in fact, this is posted from
the Linux box;-)

Found the answer on comp.os.linux.setup, thanks for the tip,
DeadSmiley!

Next will be recompile the kernel for uni-processor...or add
another PentiumPro 200 CPU.
That can wait til I get everthing checked out tho;-)

Thanks for the inquiry...
