Welp you could fork out the $14 for the RedHat
CD-ROM at your local computer store but that kinda
nullifies the value of RedHat being freeware.
Unless you have 2 hard drives I think you will
have to partition your hard drive to have at least
2 partitions one could be 32bit but the other
should be split into a RedHat native and a RedHat
swap partition.
Probably the easiest way for you to install on a
2 disk system is to have 2 partitions on the
first drive with the downloaded files on the
second partition
c:\ = 32bit
logical drive of HD1 d:\ is 16 bit and contains the RedHat
then on HD2
fdisk and format it and scan disk it
Then use your boot floppies to install RedHat on
Physical drive 2
from Physical drive 1 logical drive D:\RedHat\
I am almost at the point that I think RedHat is
becoming useless. The development is getting
pretty far behind on support for current Hardware
Its getting to the point that you really have to plan
on purchasing a system that will do only Linux.
There are no 56k PCI modems for Linux
AGP is poorly supported
No USB and
X will fry your monitor
I mean what use is it
If your running a home system there are tons
of free daemons and software for Windows that
will work just fine and install in a matter of minutes.
I mean I just think its time for Eric Raymond
to come to grips that he is totally wrong.
Linux or any Unix system may be fine for an
a speciality application, Intranet Mail Server or
even a web server but it doesn't even come close to
being a system that you can install on your desktop.
Let alone a system that you can share with the family
let kids play games and learn and mom and dad can
do a little work at home.
I would rather use dos 2.0 with Gem.
Linux is not free you really need to buy it on CD-ROM.
Then you need hardware that will support Linux.
Then you need a manual and months of training
to be able to really understand and perform the
configuration correctly and fully.
Sure you could probably get it to boot in a full day of work
including partitioning re-configuration of PnP Hardware
hunting down Video signal specs.
Then when you do what is it good for ?
You can chat on IRC all day run some Warez FTP servers
or spoof some mail.
If Sun, Linux, SCO, BSD, AIX were so great
Microsoft would be suing them I guess
And such is proof that it will really be a BE OS
or some similar thing that will be Microsoft's demise
20 years from now.
The time has come to forget all this BS and start
becoming productive with tools that are available
and useable.
If you waste a day or a week or a few hours a
day or week and you continuously need to read arcane
manuals on sendmail and write scripts and use perl
to manage a system that is basically a headache and doesn't
support your needed hardware or software
then what is the real price.
I guess its like an old car
you can buy one and make it work well
but if you need a part or technical info you have
to spend a long time hunting it down.
If you can't find what you need you have to
make the part which means a large investment in time.
And Time = Money.
Most of all there is no dealer to get your money back from.
Just writing this news post I could have written
an article for my website which would have been
another 2 pages that could have banners on them
making me money.
Honestly from now on I am gonna point my friends
towards Windows and "enemas" towards Linux.
Then again Ill make you a deal
If Clinton is thrown out of office I will devote 1 day a week
to providing help to New Linux users.
Its all about reality I guess its just time to wake up

anyone know how to set up X on this laptop? I know it uses a NeoMagic chip.
I can get X started with a small screen, but I can't seem to get it to a

I've got a generic (EONTronic or something like that) 8 meg Permedia 2
card, and with the XFCom_3DLabs server from Suse (www.suse.de or
www.suse.com) it runs great. I generally run 1280x1024 x32 bits, and it
drives my (cheap) monitor just fine. I haven't ever run another card on
the same monitor at the same resolution/depth, so I can't comment on the
image quality other than to say that I don't find any problems with it.
A friend at work owns a Sun 24" widescreen monitor, and drives it with
a FireGL at 1900-something by 1400 or so, and he says it works pretty
well - he had to do some digging to get the modelines right, though.

Just bought a new Iomega Zip 250 drive. This drive is a parallel port
model and now has 250 MB disks instead of the 100 MB like the older
drives. The write time also seems better than the old drive. Details
about the drive at http://www.iomega.com/product/zip/zip250.html
It also works great with Linux. Just use the IMM driver, same one as the
Zip Plus uses.

Nope. Windows users despise Winmodems even more than Linux users do. Check

FYI, I am using a UMAX Astra 610s. I bought a PCI based Advansys SCSI card
and have been very happy with both it and the scanner. I'm using SANE 1.0
as the driver and linked it with the gimp for scanning straight into an
image editor.

Why? Is it a lack of fixed IRQ and such? if so, some BIOS support asignments prior
to boot. I ask because I am in the same boat, with a Lucent Tech PCI V.90 that I don't
know (yet) how to configure. I also have an external
Hayes on COM1, so lack of ability to configure doesn't mean it can't be done to me...

While a software modem makes some sense in an Atari Falcon
that has a perfectly usable DSP likely sitting idle, it
makes considerably less sense in a market dominated by an
OS that doesn't manage concurrency well on hardware that
is barely more than a CPU and a bus.

Hi all...
Yes this is another posting for the Matrox G200 and Linux, in this case,
RH
5.2. I have the card mostly working thanks in great part to many peoples
kind
postings on this and other newgroups.
I apologize for the length of this posting as I am going to include a
fairly
detailed description of the steps I went through and follow that up with
some
questions at the end.
When I started researching the G200 and RH 5.2 Linux it seemed I had to
make a choice
to proceed with one of 4 directions:
1) Download the Suse server for the G200 from www.suse.com
2) Upgrade Xfree86 to 3.3.3 from www.xfree86.org
3) Upgrade Xfree86 to 3.3.3-1 using RH rpm's from
ftp://updates.redhat.com
4) Upgrade Xfree86 to 3.3.3-6 using RH rpm's from
ftp://developer.redhat.com
When I checked the Suse site, all I could find was a reference that
Xfree
3.3.3 was now out and a pointer to a site with the Suse RPMs to upgrade.
Upgrading X myself from Xfree directly seemed somewhat daunting so I
opted to
pull down the RH compliant RPM's and use those. I chose 3.3.3-6 from
developer.redhat.com because the readme's talked about a lot of fixes
since
3.3.3-1 which was all that was available from updates.redhat.com
Unfortunately, I was unable to find any directions on how to proceed
This is
what I did:
Downloaded files from ftp://developer.redhat.com/pub/rhcn/RPMS/i386/
190723 Dec 29 12:18 XFree86-rhcn-XF86Setup-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
313882 Dec 29 12:33 XFree86-rhcn-cyrillic-fonts-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
705995 Dec 29 12:38 XFree86-rhcn-VGA16-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
1095142 Dec 29 12:45 XFree86-rhcn-75dpi-fonts-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
1196419 Dec 29 12:55 XFree86-rhcn-SVGA-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
1268608 Dec 29 12:56 XFree86-rhcn-100dpi-fonts-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
1110212 Dec 29 13:00 XFree86-rhcn-libs-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
2164925 Dec 29 13:13 XFree86-rhcn-devel-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
8426568 Dec 29 13:45 XFree86-rhcn-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
958296 Dec 29 15:21 XFree86-rhcn-server-common-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
I then forced their install using rpm -i --nodeps --force *.rpm This
may have
been a mistake, but being new to linux and rpm, I could not figure out a
better solution.
I then ran xf86config and setup my card and monitor, G200 was a valid
choice.
I can now run X in 8, 16, 24 and 32 depth using the -- -bpp x (where
x=8, 16
etc) or by including the DefaultColorDepth x line in the screen section
of the
/etc/X11/XF86Config file.
Having said all of that... Here are my questions.
1) The Xconfigurator utility now core dumps on me. Has anyone else seen
this
aberrent behaviour and managed to resolve it? xf86config works just
fine?
2) I notice that in 24 and 32 bit depths my colors are a bit off? For
example
the icons in netscape are an awfull sort of grey? Again, has anyone
else
noticed this? I have 8MB of ram on my G200, do I need to upgrade to
16MB or
higher?
3) Now when I do a rpm -qa | grep -i xfree, I see both the 3.3.2
packages and
the 3.3.3 packages? Can I safely remove the 3.3.2 packages or do I need
to
uninstall everything for Xfree and install just the 3.3.3 stuff?
4) I notice in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file created for me there are
references to an Accelerated Server? Does anyone know what this is? Is
it
worth looking into? Does the G200 support it?
5) When I installed RH52 it prompted me about whether I want to include
Xvfb
as a new method of controlling the keyboard under X (rather than
Xmodmap)? I
don't profess to know much about this topic, but I do notice that the
package
for Xvfb is still 3.3.2 as there wasn't a 3.3.3-6 package on
developer.redhat.com? I did see a 3.3.3-1 Xvbf package on
updates.redhat.com?
Should I upgrade to the 3.3.3-1 version?
Once again I thank everyone for their postings and their help and beg
forgiveness for the length of this message.

<br>developer.redhat.com because the readme's talked about a lot of fixes
since
<br>3.3.3-1 which was all that was available from updates.redhat.com
<p>Unfortunately, I was unable to find any directions on how to proceed
This is
<br>what I did:
<p>Downloaded files from <A
HREF="ftp://developer.redhat.com/pub/rhcn/RPMS/i386/">ftp://developer.redhat.com/pub/rhcn/RPMS/i386/</A>

<br> 313882 Dec 29 12:33

<br> 705995 Dec 29 12:38 XFree86-rhcn-VGA16-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
<br> 1095142 Dec 29 12:45 XFree86-rhcn-75dpi-fonts-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
<br> 1196419 Dec 29 12:55 XFree86-rhcn-SVGA-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
<br> 1268608 Dec 29 12:56 XFree86-rhcn-100dpi-fonts-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
<br> 1110212 Dec 29 13:00 XFree86-rhcn-libs-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
<br> 2164925 Dec 29 13:13 XFree86-rhcn-devel-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
<br> 8426568 Dec 29 13:45 XFree86-rhcn-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
<br> 958296 Dec 29 15:21
XFree86-rhcn-server-common-3.3.3-6.i386.rpm
<p>I then forced their install using rpm -i --nodeps --force *.rpm
This may have
<br>been a mistake, but being new to linux and rpm, I could not figure
out a
<br>better solution.
<p>I then ran xf86config and setup my card and monitor, G200 was a valid
choice.
<br>I can now run X in 8, 16, 24 and 32 depth using the -- -bpp x (where
x=8, 16
<br>etc) or by including the DefaultColorDepth x line in the screen section
of the
<br>/etc/X11/XF86Config file.
<p>Having said all of that... Here are my questions.
<p>1) The Xconfigurator utility now core dumps on me. Has anyone
else seen this
<br>aberrent behaviour and managed to resolve it? xf86config works
just fine?
<p>2) I notice that in 24 and 32 bit depths my colors are a bit off?
For example
<br>the icons in netscape are an awfull sort of grey? Again, has
anyone else
<br>noticed this? I have 8MB of ram on my G200, do I need to upgrade
to 16MB or
<br>higher?
<p>3) Now when I do a rpm -qa | grep -i xfree, I see both the 3.3.2 packages
and
<br>the 3.3.3 packages? Can I safely remove the 3.3.2 packages or
do I need to
<br>uninstall everything for Xfree and install just the 3.3.3 stuff?
<p>4) I notice in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file created for me there are
<br>references to an Accelerated Server? Does anyone know what this
is? Is it
<br>worth looking into? Does the G200 support it?
<p>5) When I installed RH52 it prompted me about whether I want to include
Xvfb
<br>as a new method of controlling the keyboard under X (rather than Xmodmap)?
I
<br>don't profess to know much about this topic, but I do notice that the
package
<br>for Xvfb is still 3.3.2 as there wasn't a 3.3.3-6 package on
<br>developer.redhat.com? I did see a 3.3.3-1 Xvbf package on updates.redhat.com?
<br> Should I upgrade to the 3.3.3-1 version?
<p>Once again I thank everyone for their postings and their help and beg
<br>forgiveness for the length of this message.
<p>Shaun

Subject: Help! SCSI problem. Install can't handle Adaptec AIC 7770!
Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 00:23:35 -0500
I am trying to install Redhat 5.2 on an older HP Netserver P75. It has SCSI
built in that uses an Adaptec AIC 7770. The correct SCSI choice seems to be
the 2940 driver. During autoprobe, Redhat dies with a Kernel Panic message.
Tried Slakware and it halts after complaining of "Waiting List
Inconsistency; SCB Index=0; NumSCBS=0".
Anyone have an idea of how to fix this? I tried the suggestions in the
SCSI-HowTo FAQ and the SCSI Programming FAQ.
Thanks.
Mike

Subject: Creative Labs/Soundblaster hardware identification
Date: Wed, 30 Dec 1998 21:27:16 -0800
1) The FAQ indicate Ensoniq Soundscape is a supported card. It is not
listed with the Creative Labs hardware. There is a Creative Labs card
called "Ensoniq". Is that the same card? Did creative by the
company? Or is Creative's Ensoniq not supported?
2) I currently have a Creative Labs Vibra 16 (model CT2260, an OEM
version of CT2230). It came with a Dell. Does that work as a SB16,
or anything else, under Linux?
I'm about to get a new system for Linux, and am trying to figure what
soundcard to get/scavenge. Thanks.
