"modprobe es1371" is the command you're most likely looking for. If
that spews out an error message about "device or resource busy", post
the output of "cat /proc/pci" and your distro and kernel version. Some
AudioPCI cards use ES1371 chips with slightly greater firmware
revisions, and these don't work with kernels older than about 2.2.16.

What is the link partner?

Without seeing the raw data from /proc/net/dev I can't tell for certain, but
it looks as if you are getting CRC errors. These are usually caused by a
noisy or mispaired cable. Verify that you are using a Cat-5 cable, and that
pins 1&2 and 3&6 are pairs. A common mistake with home-made cables is to
make 3&4 and 5&6 pairs.

If the machine is overloaded you will see the 'dropped' count increase.

The CRT is the worst device on a PC that generates
RFI and EMI noise..I use an ICOM radio on my Linux
system..however, the CRT noise is not suppressed
very well, even though it exceeds FCC specs.

That being the case, has anyone noticed the
difference on the newer LED Panel monitors?
I have been told by some people at a Hospital
that they moved to the newer Panel monitors
because they do not have the noise of the old
conventional CRT. It was required to not interfere
with X-rays and other devices.

Anyone confirm this? I'm thinking of moving to
one of the newer Panel monitors.

Many thanks...

Leonard...

Hi!

I've got a soundcard with es1371 and it works well with cd, wave mp3 and
recording, but not with midi!
midi_setup: error opening /dev/sequencer is one message. cat /dev/sndstat
doesn't work as well as cat /dev/sequencer. Permissions: /dev/sequencer is
crw------- heiko.sys and /dev/sndstat is crw-r--r-- root.sys. I've got RedHat
6.1 with kernel 2.2.17, sound is no module.

Can anybody help me?
Please send it at best to my e-mail heiko.bruening@arcormail, because I don't
really know how usenet works.

Thanx Heiko.

Hello,

Last week I decided to upgrade to Netscape 6 (or even mozilla 0.6). I
was quite impressed with many of the improvements over 4.76, but really
didn't like how very slow it was. I'm running a 400MHz PII with 128Meg
of ram & so I figured the best way to improve the performance would be
to upgrade my video card from an 8Meg ATI(AGP) to a 32Meg(AGP) video
card. This was the beginning of a very bad week.

I was able to conclude that the card would run as it is using an ATI
Rage 128 chip set, which is supported under the new version of XFree86.
To upgrade to that version I ended up installing RedHat 7 & essentially
erasing my previous system. Arg... It is running faster now, but not
as much as I had expected..

I've tweeked the config file as much as I can figure
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and have included it below. Any ideas on how to
make this system run any faster?

Thanks!

Mike

I have been thinking about doing some hard drive performance tweaking.
Just wanted to get some advise. I have a 13GB IBM Deskstar ATA/IDE
UltraDMA 66 that came with my Dell (PIII) machine. I am using hdparm
currently to set the dma flag. I also used hdparm to print my IO bit
setting which it currently is set at 16-bit. The following are some
question i have:

1) If I set the IO setting to 32-bit, could there be problems if the
machine can't handle this? How would i know if the machine can or can't
handle this?

2) I understand that the IDE ribbon has a lot to do with the performance
when dealing with an UltraDMA. How do I know if I have the right ribbon?

3) Are there any other fun things that I could do with hdparm to squeeze
the performance out of my HD? Maybe someone could direct me to a good HD
tweaking website?

Answers to these question or general advise/information will be greatly
appreciated. thanx.

When browsing: d - download
Or when using Lynx to download the file directly this *might* also work:

Hello,

lookup the hardware support db on the SuSE HP, if your card is mentioned.

Try using Yast2 to get it running, worked like a champ for me (ISA Fritz
ISDN card).

you can set this option with hdparm (linux), please man hdparm.

I don't want to give you further advice on this topic, lots of options with
hdparm are dangerous, please read the manpage, do a backup, and decide

Pulling this off the top of my head, I think it's the same deal as
in winNT where using the Atapi driver, it sees the IDE drives as SCSI
devices. Of course NT sees the HDs and CD-Roms as SCSI (using the Atapi
driver) too. I'm not sure about the HDs and CD-Roms in Linux however as
I switched to a SCSI setup back in 98 and couldn't get Linux onto my old
PII until driver support came in place for the AHA-2940u2w SCSI card and
LVD HDs which wasn't until more recently.

Sound cards built on the es1371 do not (normally) have an onboard midi
synth chip. Since /dev/sequencer _requires_ a midi synth, you can't
use it with an es1371 card.

The usual suggestions here are:
a) install a user-space midi-to-wav package (like Timidity), and play
your midi files over the wav interface, or
b) install the ALSA driver (which apparently includes a software midi
synth)

Type p, choose save to disk. Anyway, typing d, should do it anyway.

You'd do better if you translated "When i want to download a file using
Lynx it won't download" into something people can understand instead of
guess at. Your intentions may perhaps result in your banging the return
key with your nose, but we won't know that! Tell us what you DO, not
what you WANT to do, and modt of all don't tell us what the computer
WILL or WON'T do, because it doesn't have any intentions at all! Tell
us what it does.

Subject: [Need Help]: LS-120 Drive
Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 15:52:35 GMT

Hi,

I have a MATSHITA Model: LS-120 VER5.00 Rev: F523 drive installed on my
SuSE-7.0 Linux distro with the Linux-2.4.0-test12 kernel. At the booting
process, the kernel as well as the SCSI emulation recognize the drive.
However, the SCSI emulation complains that the drive is assumed write
protected as shown below:

   SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00
scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
     Vendor: MATSHITA Model: LS-120 VER5 00 Rev: F523
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
     Vendor: ATAPI Model: CD-R/RW 8X4X32 Rev: 5.AW
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi removable disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
SCSI device sda: 246528 512-byte hdwr sectors (126 MB)
sda: test WP failed, assume Write Protected
    sda: unknown partition table
   Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0
   sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 32x/32x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
   Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.11

Can anyone please help me on how to setup this LS-120 so that it is R/W?
TIA.
