Subject: Primary Slave HD & FDISK
Date: 31 Dec 1998 03:07:00 GMT
Hello,
I've successfully installed a 2nd HD on my box and my BIOS recognizes it
fully. It's a Quantum Fireball EX 6.4G. This is the unit on which I'd
like to dedicate Linux on.
The problem I'm having is that when I run Linux fdisk, it tells me that it
only has 784 cylinders instead of 1023. I installed RH 5.0 anyway to see
what happens and the install went without a hitch, but when I do a "df -h"
on it, it tells me the followng:
/dev/hd1 100M (this is my "/")
/dev/hd2 5.5G (this is my "/usr")
/dev/hd3 61M (this is my "/home")
and I have about a 100M of swap space accoring to my top. (Please excuse
me if the output of df doesn't look exact, I'm going by memory here)
As you can see, it's only recognizing about 5.8G at most of my HD instead
of 6.4G. The LBA is enabled for this HD as well in my BIOS and like I
said, it's fully recognized by it. According to fdisk, I got this info:
255 heads, 63 sectors, 784 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512
bytes.
Can someone please shed some light as to why fdisk is only recognizing
only part of my HD and not the fully 1023 cylinders? During the install,
I chose to check my HD for errors and there were none.
With Best,
Steve

Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 01:04:19 GMT
Hello,
I am looking to put together a redhat 5.2 system. Today I went to the
computer store for a pentium motherboard (I already have everything
else needed, except a video card) and the guy there tried to sell me a
EM-5571 Pentium board with TXPro II Embedded 64bit VGA. I was not sure
if this Embedded video would work well with X. Has anyone tried? Does
anyone know?
BTW, he pulled up the specs on a web page, so you can too!
http://www.eurone.com/em5571.htm
Also, it has sound built in, I wonder if I could get that to work as
well? (I don't really care about sound, however. OTOH, video is pretty
important!)
Thanks,
- Steve

I purchased one just the other day. I found out that they ship from the
company preset in LQ mode. The solution for me was to do the following:
>From power off, press and hold the power on button until you hear 7 beeps and
then let it go. This will set it into BJ mode and it will then print text and
graphics (with a BC-20 ink cartridge) with Linux configured for Canon
BJC600-BJC4000. At least it worked for me. I haven't tried it with the colour
cartridge yet.

In truth, they have learned caution so well that many are in dager of
forgetting that market-driven, follow-the-leader companies usually end
up following the rest of the pack as well.

Humility comes from all directions... Here I am struggling to get my ONE ensonic
AudioPCI card working so I hit the new groups and what do I find? Someone trying to
get two working for reasons I can't even begin to understand? :)
My hats off to you Robert!
So why am I posting a response (other than to broadcast my ignorance to the world)?
Well, hopefully someone will read this, take pity on the small minded and help me out.
Here are my symptoms... RH5.2 and when I run sndconfig, it recognizes the card as a
Model ES1371 and everything looks great. However, when it attempts to play the sound
byte it comes out very choppy and garbled, not really recognizable... I've tried
manually configuring it as a ES1370 and
receive error messages that es1370.o is busy???
Has anyone else had similar problems and have they managed to resolve them?
Thanks again for both your help and to Robert for letting me piggyback off his
posting... :)

What I forgot to say, some operations, like recover after the
screen saver (or the screen saver for itself for that matter)
seem to be fairly fast, while others (like dragging windows)
are awfully slow.
Anyway, XFree86 recognizes the Cyber9397DVD as a Cyber9397, which
seems to be okay and it even detects my 1024x768 TFT screen correctly.

You are dead wrong. While it's true that linux doesn't work with
winmodems, you are dead wrong as to the reasons why. The information
needed to write a winmodem driver is unavailable to linux programmers.
It doesn't *matter* whether or not linux people want to write windmodem
drivers - the specs are hidden and they *can't*.
As to the "winmodems suck" angle - the reason for saying so is 100%
technical, and not because of the word "win" in it. Putting the
modem's signal processing stuff into the OS's hands is a big waste.
However, even so, I do think that a part of the "winmodems suck"
attitude probably is sour grapes. After all, linux supports a lot
of other really inferior hardware out of necessity because it is
common and cheap, like IDE as opposed to SCSI. I am 100% confident
that *if* the information were available, someone *would* write a
linux winmodem driver and it would find its way into the main
distributions.
But unless the info is there, it remains a moot point.

I have had very good Luck with the Toshiba 4000CDS. It is not a "high

model that can meet your specs.
If you have not already found it, take a look at the laptop page at

When you narrow down your selection to a specific model, then you might
