I also forgot to mention that while I was at the program turning off
PnP, I assigned the network card the same IRQ and the same IO as was
reported under Windows at the time it was running in PnP mode. Hope
this helps all.

Look for help in Gary's Encyclopedia at

http://www.aa.net/~swear/pedia/scanning.html

There's ready help on the Epson 600;
the scanner might require some digging.

Hmmm... maybe this is related to the Doom problem (I'm the one who posted
about it.) It's as if the sound driver is lowering the sample rate to
compensate for a slow CPU. Why this should affect only this card and not
others - or at least no others have been reported - is beyond me.
I think I'll go through the source and see if I can fix that.

Try using "xvidtune" as root to tweak the modeline setting. It lets you
move around and resize the display image onto the monitor. This may fix
part of the problem. Once you get a good modeline, just copy the
settings onto you XF86Config file. The "virtual" thing you are talking
about is actually a feature most people seem to hate. Search your
XF86Config for the lines containing "Virtual" in them and change those
likes to match your actual display size.

Subject: PS/2 Mouse Problem
Date: Fri, 01 Jan 1999 12:23:32 -0500

Hi,

I need help using my mouse in Linux. On my old Pentium 100 machine I
had a serial mouse connected to a serial port or com1. When I set up
Linux, I set up the device to point to /dev/cua0 (for com1). This
worked - I was able to get into Linux and use X windows and the mouse
worked.

I've since upgraded to a Pentium II 350 with a BX6 motherboard. I have
connected up a PS/2 mouse and it works fine in windows 98. It is on IRQ
12. However, when I go into Linux and into X windows - the mouse
doesn't move. It is not connected to com1 (IRQ3) anymore.

So is that the problem??? How do I get Linux to work with a PS/2 mouse
on IRQ12??? I guess I have to assign the /dev/mouse device to some
other /dev!!!

Could someone please help???

Thanks!!!!!!

Perhaps that's because cua1 usually refers to com2:, while cua0 usually
refers to com1: ? Also, are you sure your modem has a speaker ? Are
you sure that it might not be set on L0 so that it doesn't make sound ?
Also, if you are the only user on your machine, I would guess that
there's little risk in granting rw permission to others on the
device(chmod o+rw /dev/cua0), so you don't have to always su to root to
use the modem (probably safer than making the programs that use it suid,
anyway).

It would be better to set up minicom to try to communicate with it on
the appropriate com port and just trying a dial string, and start off by
observing the response to at&f and atz commands.

Work on some "intensive apps" for a while and use the "free" command to
seem how much swap is actually used. Most likely you will not use any
but it is a good idea to have some around as I doubt that you are
hurting for 30MB of swap space (heck Windows wastes more than that
amount in its fat partition scheme for large partitions!)

The swap size=2*memory size rule came about on systems with certain
virtual memory schemes which are different from that used by Linux so
you don't really need that much. Imagine the swap space as a overflow
tank when ram is full on rare occations. Besides, you can't make one
swap partition bigger than 128MB though you can make multiple swap
parititions.

I have used EZ-Drive on my notebook for a while (2.1GB drive, dx33 NEC
notebook), it works great with LINUX, linux picks up that is's there
and everything. I have had problems with LILO though, so I kept a
10MB dos part, and have l.oadlin setup via the config.sys.

Email me if you have any questions in this regard.

Hello folks,

I am trying to install a new 4.3 GB Caviar hard drive on my machine, and
apparently I need to use a piece of software called EZ-Drive to allow my
machine to see the whole drive. (It seems that my machine's BIOS doesn't
know how to deal with disks bigger than 2 GB: it's an old 486.) The Large
Disk Mini-HOWTO doc seems to say that Linux is compatible with EZ-Drive,
though only after kernel version 1.3.18 or something like that.

Is anyone out there sucessfully using Linux with EZ-Drive? If so, what
distribution are you using (and what kernel version)? Did you have to jump
through any extra hoops to get it to work? I need to put Windows95 on the
disk along with Linux, and Win95 apparently needs EZ-Drive to be installed,
so doing away with EZ-Drive isn't an option. Just as an experiment I tried
installing an old distribution of Linux that I had (kernel v1.2.13) with
EZ-Drive already installed, and the Linux installer seemed to overwrite all
or part of EZ-Drive with LILO on the disk's master boot record, putting
things into a very weird state. I'm prepared to get a new distribution of
Linux, but only if I can be reasonably confident that it will work with
EZ-Drive.

Thanks in advance,
