Don't worry that for now: just pick "generic multisync" and leave it
alone.

Here is your problem. The Starfighter is an i740 based card. It can
work in SVGA mode, but the defaults then selected by the X configuration
tools really, really suck. And programming the XF86Config file by
hand is not for the faint of heart, although the various X configuration
seem to almost mandate that you use it.
Hop on over to to ftp://rufus.w3.org/linux/XBF/, which has the RedHat
development drivers mirrored. Grab the libc6 RPM for your system,
install them, grab the xf86config tarball, install that. While you're
there, also grab the Xconfigurator from
ftp://rufus.w3.org/linux/redhat/redhat-5.2.
Then pull this bit of deceitfulness, to confuse the Xconfigurator into
using appropriate options for the card:
Make sure that you *delete* the XFree86 SVGA drivers (rpm -e
XFree86-SVGA). Make a symbolic link from the X drivers for the 740
(something like /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86-XBF-i740) to the location of the
SVGA driver, /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86-SVGA. Then run Xconfigurator and
select the SVGA driver. Do not use the "probe" option, tell it that
you have 8 Meg of RAM, etc. etc. This should give you some reasonable
options for screen resolution and color depth.
You may need to make minor editing changes in /etc/X11/XF86Config after
this, but it should be basically OK.

Is there a way to use Sun monitors with PCs?
My group here at NIH is moving from Sun systems to PCs running NT and Linux,
I thought that the 21" monitors might be used on the new PC systems.
Maybe a special adapter is need for the PCs?

I have a US Robotics V.90 and a hayes Accura (both are external). The
USR modem consistently connects much faster and is in general much more
reliable than the Accura. The USR typically connects at 50666 baud; the
Accura can barely manage mid 40K; oftern low 40K.
Both run on Linux, but as I said, both are external. You can pick up a
serial card for a few bucks and use an external.

I had this problem with one of my 486 machines, it is an M-Tech R407
motherboard with an AMD DX4/100 installed. It would randomly switch between
acting normal and like a 10 Mhz machine, in fact, it acted just as if I
would randomly hit the turbo button (clue 1). I would run it under DOS
running the Landmark program, and could watch it speed up and slow down.
I was able to get an upgrade BIOS for the machine and with the new BIOS, it
worked fine, the only problem is that the new BIOS only saw 128K of cache,
while the older (buggy) one saw 256K! From these two things, I assume that
there is some problem with the cache which the newer BIOS sees and so
disables the buggy part while the older one just didn't see it.
note to clue one: some motherboards implemented the turbo button as
disabling the cache, the first clue that this might be a cache problem.

Thanks, I spoke too soon about not recognizing the SCSI. If I tell the
installation program that I have a SCSI CDROM, which I don't, it does
find the SCSI controller and correctly identifies the disks on it.
I still can't get it to recognize the Sony DVD that is on the IDE
controller. I put in the "linux hda=cdrom" statement and it seems to
make no difference. Looking at the messages (Ctrl-Alt-F3 or F4) it
finds an ATAPI device type 17 on hda, which it says is unrecognized.
Any ideas on this.

Mike,
I assume you're referring to Linksys Ether16 ...
Here's *part* of the solution: I called the company and fussed: they
said to turn off the plug-n-play (I didn't think it'd go on, but it
does).
Do this:
Boot DOS. On the Utility disk, run the setup program. Select the
adr/irq you want. I used 0x300 and irq 10. Now it's not PnP anymore.
They said use the NE2000 driver with Linux. They said their board runs
Linux, but they didn't provide the driver. Thanks, Linksys! 'ne.o' is
the NE2000 driver in the RedHat 5.2 package, so that's what I used.
*NOW I NEED HELP* --- ne.o gets errors when I try loading it up.
Typical messages about 'unresolved symbol ei_open' etc. Looks like
it's not compiled right or something. How can I rebuild it or get
a new copy? (The board itself works fine under Win-NT4.)
What to do?

This modem is supposed to have jumpers, according to the Netcomm website.
It would be a lot easier to disable PnP and set the jumpers for a plain

Um, wrong.
Could be your kernel already has the right driver in there, but it
is *definitely* not your run-of-the-mill IDE hard drive code.
My own ZIP uses the ATAPI-floppy driver. Others uses SCSI drivers,
and there are even weirder setups for the parallel versions of the ZIP.
Don't know about Jaz, but I wouldn't imagine they use standard hard drive

I'm testing an 8MB Intel740-based video card made by something called

evidenced by simply dragging a window around on the screen; just
normal-speed dragging causes the window to continue moving long after
the mouse has been released.
I'm using the driver developed by Precision Insight and Red Hat,
downloaded from ftp://ftp.precisioninsight.com/pub/pi/XBF/. The

My question is, is the i740 in general slow, or is it just this cheapo

the Diamond Stealth II/G460 AGP?
Thanks for any input....

The question is: has the display a digital or an analog input. In the
latter case it is no problem (but the display-quality not as it could be).
But the digital TFT's (the one's, we are interested in) are not such an easy
thing because they are mostly bundled with a graphiccard and these cards
are not supported (except those with old chipsets).
But there are also some good news:
We have here a IBM T55D TFT-Display with a Matrox G200 (digital) card
working in Vesa-Framebuffer-Mode and it is absolutly perfect :) .

Ever looked at the new SGI TFT display (I think 1900x1200).
