Hi

I had the same problem with an USR, but finaly, it wasn't an USR
problem, I've symly not defined the comport speed for the pppd. You can
do this py a parameter.

Non sequitur.

SuSE 5.3 ships with glibc2, though I can't remember whether it's 2.0.6
or one of the 2.0.7 CVS snapshots. Oracle 8 requires only 2.0.6,
though early documentation (which I helped get them to correct)
claims it requires 2.0.7.

FYI, SuSE provides some sort of patch specifically to support Oracle:

Hmm, well, no flaming from this quarter. Witness the RH 5.2 server I
run. I had actually bought a copy of NT 4 server (which isn't cheap),
and decided that it was too clumsy, flaky and ugly to use, and grabbed
myself a copy of RH 5.2 instead. The NT is unused in the box on a
shelf, and the linux box is going great guns, and hasn't missed a beat
yet.

It's not that I am unwilling to pay for software (either personally or
professionally), but that I'd rather use the best tool for the job. In
this case, I was delighted to stick the brand spanking new copy of a
sub-standard OS (costing 600UKP) on the shelf, and replace it with one
which does the job.

Again, where an M$ tool is the best option, I'll use it.. I do have an
NT351 file/print server which runs quite well, and a load of Windows
client machines.. they are what users know, and are familiar with.

For beleaguered job IT people, the legitimisation of linux is
something of a godsend. In the past, TPTB were unwilling to let you
install mission-critical services on "some free system downloaded from
the net"- but now even the psueds at wired have heard of it (in their
coke-addled and inaccurate way), the Pointy Haired Bosses [tm] don't
worry so much. For people like me, an efficient, fast, solid O/S is
the main aim, and if it happens to be free, even better- it gets rid
of all the dubious motivations and lock-in tactics beloved of M$ et
al.

It doesn't mean that I won't buy commercial software for linux, either
for the office or home. Quite the reverse.

The Matrox G200 is another popular choice which requires the same
update. These two seem to be the current leaders.

Indeed, and you may want to use the redhat "rawhide" distribution
to get a complete 2.2-ish system. I have one with dual 400s set
up and it is working without problems.

Unix/Linux boxes have been running great w/o video cards since they were
created.

The Wavelan devices are supported under Linux. Furthermore, there are
devices such as Breezecom that you simply plug the ethernet cables
into, so no drivers are required. However, this option means plugging
into a port with an AC cord rather than sliding a PC card into your
notebook and taking it onto the porch.

They work fine, but they transmit 1 to 2 megabits per second rather
than the usual 10 or 100, and you will notice that this is
substantially slower. The 5 gigahertz models are supposed to come out
soon and bump up the speed.

It doesn't seem to be working with any standard-server and so it only uses a

A freind and I have just had probs with a 3c905b card (in RH5.2). The prob we
had was that it was in plug n' Pray mode. So instead of detectiong correctly
(io=0x210,irq=5) it got io=0x300,irq=10. We got round this with the latest
driver disk from 3com which included a util for HW setting the card to ISA mode
rather than PNP

> Is there a driver for this device? Which one should I use.

In thr RH5.2 manual there is a page(in mine 304) about the different modules to
use, if it is a 3c509b then use "insmod 3c509.o" and pass the io and irq to it.
Otherwise use 3c590.o driver

I am a newbie also, using Redhat 5.1 & 5.2 and SuSe 5.3.
I found SuSe a little easier to use, and the x servers that
SuSE includes set up and work better than the Redhat
distributions.

Although RedHat gets all the publicity , I would recommend
trying SuSe as well. http://www.suse.com - or
you can get them from www.lsl.com or cheapbytes.com

What modem?

> And if not can anybody guess what they assume is happening ?

It's easy to guess what is happening. You have a tone generator and a
tone decoder on a board.
The computer software tweedles the right tones out onto the phone line,
and checks for high/low status of the tone decoder, and assembles the
bits
into something resembling a byte.

Why tie up an expensive CPU when a few dollars worth of chips can do
the same thing unattended?
