I have just purchased a lj100 which I use with redhat 7.0. However, the
printer seems to print just one page at a time, that is, it receives the
data for one page, prints that, receives the data for the second page,
prints that, etc. Is there anyway of altering this behavior? Is this
endemic to all laser printers on linux systems?
Clearly, operating this way, the printer prints at much slower than
advertised speeds.
Thanks for any comments and advice,

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone out there has a success effort in configuring the
audio (SoundBlanster Pro) system on an Asus K7M mobo. When I have added
`append="sb=0x220,5,1"' included in the /etc/lilo.conf, the system keeps
complaining with the following messages when I do a login with KDE2:

Jan 20 12:56:36 toba kernel: Sound Blaster: DSP command(48) timeout.
Jan 20 12:56:36 toba kernel: Sound Blaster: unable to start DAC.
Jan 20 12:56:36 toba kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config
error?
Jan 20 12:56:37 toba kernel: Sound Blaster: DSP command(40) timeout.
Jan 20 12:56:37 toba kernel: Sound Blaster: DSP command(d1) timeout.
Jan 20 12:56:37 toba kernel: Sound Blaster: DSP command(48) timeout.
Jan 20 12:56:37 toba kernel: Sound Blaster: unable to start DAC.

If I took out the `append="sb=0x220,5,1"' line in the /etc/lilo.conf, the
login is fine with the login audio, too. However, in either case I can't
get the rosegarden to play a midi file.

I certainly will appreciate anyone who has successfully configured his/her
Linux system with the Asus K7M audio. TIA.

The site I am developing will be specializing in hardware and may be
software that things normal people can buy (we're not going to have a review

So far I've finished site design, and registered a domain name

Our development team consists of five people (including me).

Hi

I recently got given a PowerSpec 1660 PC. By today's standard it's a little
underspecced (1 Gig drive, 16Meg of memory), but I have managed to get
RedHat Linux 6.2 up and running on it, as well as get it connected to an
ethernet via a network card in it. I even managed to get Gnome to run by
guessing the right video settings for the X11 setup.

Now what I want to do is to upgrade this machine a little to use it as a
webserver (for about 5 people), and as a network router. To do this I need
more memory, another hard drive, and another network card. I have talked to
Microcenter (who make this machine) and it seems I can get the memory no
problems. But beyond helping me with the memory they are essentially
useless. I need to know answers to the following questions and was hoping
some Linux person could help me out:

a) can this machine support 2 drives and 2 ethernet cards (are there
enough slots/ports?). I think so just looking at the spec sheet, but I
am not sure (at present I have one ethernet card plugged into the modem
slot, so I should be able to use the other PCI slot for the second card
...).

b) how big an EIDE drive can the second internal drive be? Microcenter
weren't sure, but guessed at 6Gig. Anyone know the correct number? Also
will any EIDE drive do the trick, or does it have to have a specific
thickness, etc?

c) I guess I need an ethernet card that plugs into the PCI bus slot. Any
suggestions for this. A Linksys 10-100 card seems a good bet ...

Any help would be greatly appreciated since Microcenter's people know
nothing, and this seems like a workable solution for my needs.

thanks
graham

Hello,

I'm having trouble with my motherboard as it doesn't boot with a GeForce 2
GTS card. I upgraded to this from my old Voodoo 3 3500, which worked fine
in the same slot in the same board. I have had both the card and the board
checked and also had the GeForce exchanged to no effect. I'm just
wondering if anyone else has had the same problem, I'm going to change the
board if no one can suggest anything but as I'm a student I'd rather use
the FIC board. Someone said something about noise on cheap AGP busses and
the GeForce needing a very clean signal. Does anyone know anything about
this?

Hello,

I have a Gateway G6-350 dual booting (W98/RH Linux 7.0) through System
Commander. Shutting down the machine from W98 works fine (the machine
is shut down and turned off). Attempting to shutdown from Linux only
reboots the machine.

My suspicion is IRQ conflicts, and more specifically, RH Linux 7.0
handling of them. Otherwise this would be a hardware
only/OS-independent problem, and W98 would have the same problem
shutting down.

Anyone has experienced this or knows where I should look?

Thanks!

What mode is your 675 operating in? If you're connected in RFC1483 bridge
mode, don't worry about it. The unit looks like a cable connection between
your NIC and your ISP. One way to tell if is your ISP has assigned you a
'permanent' IP address inside of their netblock.

My setup is exactly like that, and it works without any problems at all.
Heck, I don't even have to worry about the Cisco 675 Commander being up to
use it.

Hope this helps a little.

Are you sure that "shutdown" is being called with the -h option? Try
"shutdown -h" from the command line as root, and if that shuts the
machine down while your normal shutdown procedure makes it reboot, then
your normal procedure is calling "shutdown -r" or its equivalent.

If that's not the problem, please tell me, what do IRQs have to do with
the APM standards for shutting a machine down? Check
/usr/src/$KERNELVERSION/arch/i386/kernel/apm.c if you think there's a
problem with the disabling/enabling of IRQs in the code....

Or build a new kernel, and in the options for APM, say Y to "Use real
mode to power off". There are a number of br0ken APM BIOSes where this
option is required for the machine to actually shut down.

I'm using a much older box and a 15 GB UDMA 66 hard drive worked just fine
on the on-board interface. I've installed a Maxtor (Promise) UDMA 100

I'd use the on-board interface until you get a feel for Linux, and then
patch the kernel and use the higher-speed interface. You'll probably do
well to leave any ATAPI CDROM's and/or LS120's and/or ZIPXXX's on the
on-board controller when it's all said and done.

Hello,

I have one more question - regarding the MIDI-out functionality. You
wrote that this is done in software - I don't understand. Why would a
MIDI soundcard need software to send MIDI events out of the card (on
midi out) ? I thought that all you need is a program that writes MIDI
events to the card, and then the card should forward the MIDI events to
a sound module, for example.
>From what I read about timidity, this program actually plays MIDI events
 - so that would be audio out, not MIDI out. I thought that the es1370
driver would provide at least two devices - MIDI in and MIDI out.
Could you explain that ?
Thank you for your help.

Martin

I am having probelms loading RH 6.2 on a new AZZA MB with an AMD Athlon

I reboot the machine I get a kernel panic. Something about a syncing

Any clues.
