Note that your motherboard's bus won't be running at 800MHz.

You will probably have a 133MHz bus. The CPU will have a 6x clock
multiplier circuit on-board, which will produce an 800MHz clock for its
own internal use.

Any board you get that supports a 133MHz bus should be able to handle
any faster CPUs that also use a 133MHz bus. As far as the motherboard
is concerned, it's all 133MHz. But this isn't a guarantee, so I'd check
out some independant reviews. See below.

Keep in mind, also, that a 6x multiplier (what an 800MHz CPU uses) is
pretty high. It is likely that your next-generation CPU will use a bus
speed faster than 133MHz. Also note that Intel's next-generation chips
are going to use sockets again, not Slot-1. In other words, it is
likely that your next CPU purchase will require a new motherboard
anyway. I wouldn't worry too much about the ability to upgrade the CPU,
unless you plan to do so within 6 months or so.

WRT chipsets, there are two major brands out there. VIA and Intel.
Intel's chipsets generally require expesnive RAMBUS memory. VIA is
making high-speed chipsets that support the less expensive SDRAM. Both
vendors have good, bad and ugly chipsets. There are some other vendors
as well, but I'm not familiar with them. I won't recommend a specific
chipset, but I will point you at two resources I know of:

    - The current issue of Maximum PC magazine has a review of common
      chipsets: http://www.maximumpc.com/reprint/chips/index.html

     - Tom's Hardware Guide: http://www.tomshardware.com

WRT motherboards, I have found Asus to be very reliable. There are
other good brands, but I don't have personal experience with them.
There are numerous web sites that review boards, I happen to be familiar
with Tom's Hardware Guide: http://www.tomshardware.com.

Check out section 17 of AMD's K6-III data sheet:
        http://www.amd.com/K6/k6docs/pdf/21918.pdf

According to this, the maximum temperature of the CPU (at the center of
the chip's upper surface) should not exceed 65 degreed C.

> I think my is pretty high. I can't find out what is the actual

it seems a bit high to me. Given that the limit is 65 degrees, I'd want
to try and keep the temperature down below 50 degrees. Preferably below
45, if possible. Here are some things to check out:

1: Do you have thermal compound between the top of the CPU and its heat
sink? If not, get some and apply it. This actually helps a lot.

If, for any reason you need to separate the CPU from the heat sink in
the future, be sure to remove the old and apply new compound before
   reinstalling the heat sink.

2: Does the CPU heat sink have a fan on it? If not, consider a heat
sink with a fan. Unless you are certain that your case-fans are
moving enough air across the CPU, you should always use a heat-sink
   with a fan.

3: Do you have any case-fans other than the one in your power supply?
If not, consider adding one or two.

4: Are your case fans blowing in the right direction? You want to make
sure that each additional fan increases the amount of airflow. If
one is installed backwards, it will decrease the amount of airflow.

5: You might want to consider an active-cooling heat sink for the CPU.
These (aka "Peltier" heat sinks) are small air conditioners. They
actively suck heat away from the CPU and blow it into the case. (You
will still need adequate airflow through the case in order to
dissipate this heat.) They can greatly reduce CPU temperature, but
they are usually not required, unless you're overclocking your CPU.

I don't think this is a hardware issue.

If so, add proper entries in /etc/hosts for both machines,

After I choose Desktop, Desktop Plus, Server, or Custom, the system reboots.

1) What would cause this? (Clearly not the video card, since the GUI starts
just fine. Perhaps it's the ATA-66 controller? It's a new Dell w/40GB
disk.)

2) What's the workaround? I have another computer, so if it's just a matter
of copying the Corel CD to HD, replacing some files (such as kernel stuff),
and burning a new CD, I can do that.

I've found http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA-9.html

and I think it might be useful once the OS is installed. But I'm not sure
how to get it installed in the first place!

I recently bought a creative labs modem blaster II and it works great
under linux.

Other hints to determine if a modem will work with linux are:
Does it support DOS/Win 3.x -- then it will most likely work under linux
Does it say win-modem on the box -- will NOT work in linux
is it ISA -- I am pretty sure it will work under linux
does it cost less than 20$ -- probably will not work with linux and is
most likely a piece of junk also :)

Hope this helps.

Maybe you will have to upgrade the files in the /boot-directory if you
upgrade LILO. Did you do some kind of "make install"?

If you are unable to boot with LILO from that drive you might be able to
boot by placing your root partition on an ordinary IDE- or SCSI-drive.
If you still find LILO useless you might want to try loadlin or as a
last resort you could make yourself a boot floppy.

Thanx for the information, but I still have the problem. I've mentioned that
if I press a key that I'll get a sequence of scancodes e.g. scancode for the
number "4" is 0x85, after pressing the additional function key I get 0x85
0x85. I can't work with this sequence of scancodes, because it's not unique.

However, thanx for the information!!!

What is presently the better way to have two discs to be accessed

I used MD some time ago in another contexte and am told that LVM gives
similar possibilities.
By the way, my plan is to have Sybase database files on this volume. I
don't want to use the "raw" device possibility of Sybase, only writing

Hi everyone:

I hope someone could shed some light into this problem:

I have a 64MB dual P5-200 (Non-MMX) system that is running 2.2.12-20 SMP and
it runs fine, except that any of the 2 JDK's I've tried on it usually hose
themselves, or hose the entire system. I use the java runtime in conjunction
with the Apache JServ and the GNU JSP stuff.

The sun 1.2.2 version causes a kernel panic (nice)

The IBM 1.3 (specifically the cx130-20000605 build) doesn't kill the
machine, but it winds up dying anyways.

I downloaded Blackdown, but I haven't installed it yet. So far, I'm 0 for

Of course, everything's happy in Uniprocessor mode.

Subject: Some questions about /dev
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 22:36:03 +0200

Hi,

My system crashed a while ago. It used to work fine.
(RH6.0, Lilo dual boot.)

I've tried several LILO options like:
linux single
linux root=....
linux /bin/sh

These options all produce the same error. I do not get a
kernel panic
error.
It says:
....
VMS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly
Freeing unused kernel memory: 60 k freed
Warning: unable to open an initial console.

In the SUSE support database I read that tty1 could be erased. I think
this is the case.
When I startup with a rescue image I can mount the root (/dev/hdb1) and
create a console (mknod ...).
After rebooting the system still halts but I do not get the 'unable to
open an initial console' warning.

When I look on the mounted disk, /dev is empty, except for the console I
created. (In fact /dev didn't
even exist at first.)

My questions:
What could have happened to /dev? Did I lose data from harddisk?
Can I somehow copy /dev from rescue floppy to my hard disk? How?
If not, any suggestions?

I would be grateful if someone has some useful suggestions.
Thanks
Roelof

Analog web site says that it works with Linux, but where can I find a
driver for it?

Subject: tape on scsi bus (serveraid)
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 23:09:19 +0200

Hi,

I'm trying to use a Travan tape device on a IBM Netfinity 3500. Testing
simple tar returns io errors (really?).
Now, first thing, this tape is on a scsi bus on a ServeRaid Raid Array
Controller, behind three RAID5 disk drives. (Is that OK?)

distrib is RH 6.1
kernel is 2.2.12.20
ServeRaid bios is 3.60.21
kernel SCSI support: yes,
scsi tape support: st in module

#mt -f /dev/st0 retension
or
#tar -cvf /dev/st09 /etc
makes It wheeeeerrr and blink and prints on screen(among other things):

st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00: sense
key Unit Attention
Additional sense indicates Power on, reset, or bus device reset occurred
st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00: sense
key Not Ready
Additional sense indicates Logical unit is in process of becoming ready
st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00: sense
key Not Ready
Additional sense indicates Logical unit is in process of becoming ready
st0: Error on write filemark.

Here's what dmesg has to say on SCSI
