Where do you see a wait? The Redhat packages are quicker and (dare I
say it?) easier to install on a Redhat system. If you don't use RPMs
you can't later use RPM checksum verification to scan for tampering.
Indeed, the xfree86.org binary packages themselves are not even
cryptographically signed.

I could not use the termination jumper because the LVD drive does not
have jumper termination. The standard version did. And UW terminators
cost $35-$50.

When do you get this message? What kernel are you using?
Try doing a 'route -add net 127.0.0.0'
Does that give you that error?

Is there any setting in your ROM that affects VGA? I had the same card
and it worked perfectly after I changed such a setting. I've been
using the S3 server.

Hmmn. I'll try (from gray-cell memory). Have you set up the print
queue for the new printer? At least in Debian, they are at
/var/spool/lpd. Have you reconfigured or otherwise set up /etc/printcap?
Sorry, I don't use printtool-3.28; don't know if it attempts to do the
same. If this doesn't do it, e-mail me and I'll respond from my home
machine (where hopefully my responses can be more fact-based).

Precisely. And "we" (well, certainly most of us) are used to
sentences that start with a capital letter. It's not for nothing that
virtually all written languages have this rule (well, this obviously
excludes languages without capital letters --- or without letters, for
that). It evolved over a long time and proved a good idea.

But you yourself said it could easily be automated. Why is goint from
the words. The extra => the words. the extra
any more difficult than vice-versa?

Hi,
Has anyone managed to get an Altra pointing device to work with X and
Linux?
Mine kind of works. But when I get close to the edge of the screen, the
cursor stops before reaching the edge, and then slowly crawls all the
way to the edge while the mouse is stationary. When you use the device
under Windows, you have to traverse the edges of the screen once before
using the device. I do that with Linux, but the next time I move toward
some of the screen edges, the cursor stops short of the edge again.
I using Linux 2.0.31 with XFree86 release 3.3.2. The Altra device is a
PS/2 device, and that is what I have specified in my XF86Config file for
the Pointer Protocol.
I'd like to hear the experiences of others.
Thanks,
Paul

I installed a Soyo mb, and now I can't access my 2gig Linux drive!
Matter of fact, even when I re-partitioned it as a vfat win95 drive,
it still won't boot!
My primary drive (a 4gig udma drive) works fine. I've even tried a 3rd
1gig drive (not udma), and it gives the same error, that it's not a
bootable drive. Is this possibly a problem cause between old drives
and new (bx) hardware?

Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 18:08:11 GMT
Sorry if this question has been beaten to death previously, I have been
searching on the newsgroups and on the RedHat site for a definite answer, to
no avail. I am about to buy a PentiumII machine for RedHat distribution 5.2,
but reading the RedHat hardware compatibility list, it says that "the Promise
series of "Ultra-ATA" controllers (and *other* Ultra ATA, Ultra DMA or ATA 33
controllers) appear to be incompatible with RH Linux." There is another doc
that I read, the Ultra-DMA Howto, that doesn't directly answer my question
either.
My problem is that almost all of the possible machines I could buy have the
Ultra ATA/UDMA drives and controllers on them. Ultra ATA has become the
defacto standard (sorry, SCSI is slightly out of my price range) for cheap
desktop machines. Does this mean that RHLinux 5.2 will not work with *any*
machine that has a Ultra ATA/UDMA drive and controller? Is this a problem in
the kernel? (which I guess means that any distribution of Linux would have
the same incompatibility, or is it only RH?)Or does this only apply to add-in
PCI-bus controllers, and not to the hard drive controllers that are
integrated into the motherbd? If I have a machine with an integrated Ultra
ATA controller, than will it run with Linux but only in the slower EIDE mode?
Is there something special I'll have to do during the install? I must not be
the first person to ask this because the Ultra ATA drives are so ubiquitous.
Obviously, I don't wanna buy a new machine only to find out that I can't
install and run Linux on it.
much thanks from a newbie,
Scott Serata

It is easy to come up with sentences which are ambiguous *with* proper
capitalization. I think the infamous M$ Windows error message alluded
to in my signature qualifies for this :-) Not that ambiguity is
restricted to M$ software.

The UDMA drives will still work as EIDE or IDE
I have notice that UDMA compatibility is tested by the kernel at startup.
and I read somewhere that if the Controller+Disk is not one of the known good
combinations, then UDMA is dissabled
it is done to protect the disk + data

Subject: Strange Freeze - Linux 2.0.33 (SuSE release)
Hi
I'm not sure if this is documented or not; i can;t find reference
to it anywhere, and it's never occured to me before:
PROBLEM:
Linux box freezes upon entering shutdown, maybe related
to frozen rlogin session.
DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS:
Box 1 (September) and 2 (Rakshasa) are connected on a network.
I am logged in to September from Rakshasa using rlogin. At
the September prompt, i enter "shutdown -h now", everything
proceeds as expected (machine shuts down), except that i am
not logged out (i did not type "exit" or "logout"). So,
September is now powered down, but i still have a frozen
login prompt (for September) on my screen (Rakshasa).
I login to Rakshasa on tty2, and try killing the rlogin.
This "apparently" removes the processes, but the rlogin
session is still frozen. I try to kill the shell from
which i started my rlogin session, this also does not
unfreeze the rlogin session.
So, now i try to shutdown Rakshasa:
1. I type "shutdown -h now"
2. I get the system wide shutdown notification
3. I type "logout"
4. I am now logged out
5. The machine hangs (shutdown procedures have not started).
I waited for 30 minutes, but nothing else happened, so i
manually powered the system down.
So... ever heard of anything like this before? I know it's
a strange sequence of events, but surely this should not happen.
