Hi,
I want to install the Adaptec 2920 on my machine, through this list I got a
tip that this SCSI card use some Future Domain drivers. Also I understood
that RH supports this, but I'm running Slackware...So what to do. Forget
Slackware and get Red Hat instead....? Or can I find these drivers
anywhere? Anybody knows....?

Thanks all for your responses,
When we installed RedHat v6.0, the problem evaporated. I am willing to
back the premise made by Krishnan that the SCSI drivers in RH 5.2 are
broken.

Subject: can I use my ALPS MD-1300 printer ?
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 03:53:23 GMT
OK, i'd like to know if i can try to set up my printer next. the catch
is this:
I have an ALPS MD-1300 printer. It is a dye-sublimation printer, which
also prints with a lesser quality set of dyes for everyday use, as
well
as for text (with the black dye). The black prints out beautifully at
1200 dpi, and looks like laser output. The high quality dyes look like
photographs.
Anyway, ALPS says they do not yet have a Linux driver, but they are
working on it. They say to keep an eye out on their web site. In the
meanwhile, is there a way to get this puppy working, even in text
mode?
It is quite a bit different from bubblejets, etc.
Also, what is the difficulty involved with writing a device driver for
a
printer? I have no intention of trying it, it will be many years (if
ever) before I have those skills. Should I expect ALPS (assuming they
are motivated) to be able to do this in a few weeks, a few months, or
a
matter of years ?
It is a really nice printer. I do a lot of work in Photoshop, and am
quite impressed with what I've seen so far from the gimp. I've always
said that Photoshop was one of the main things which makes me need
win95. Of course, I'll have to be able to print...
thanks,

These fans are not only 43 CFM max (oridinary case fans rate 12-14 CFM),
they are temperature sensing. They have a temperature probe that regulates
the speed based on your case temp (22-43 CFM). The fans are completely
quiet. Adding these fans or replacing your existing intake and output fans
with these offers a huge improvement in airflow. These are pre-wired and
ready to plug in. I also have pre-wired Gamma 28 blowers (Squirrel Cage
Fans) which are great for cooling a hot video card, or other internal
airflow applications. These come pre-wired and ready to install in your PC.
The fans are 80mm (3 Inch) standard case fan size. If you can find a 12
volt fan this size that pumps out more than 43 CFM please e-mail me, cause I
think these are the best!

You are one of the lucky ones. There are a lot of Vibra16 PnPs that
don't do 16-bit DMA (although they do 16-bit D/A conversion.) I am

Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 04:28:29 GMT
I'm looking into a power-managed multiprocessing system.
Essentially, several computers will be set up as a Parallel Virtual
Machine (PVM, see the papers) and will run on an "as-needed" basis.
When not needed, I want the machines to hibernate, to reduce heat created
and power consumption.
What this means is that I want to be able to wake the remote machines
up via the Wake-on-LAN feature of an ethernet card, and then use the
standard power management facilities to suspend unused PCs.
It would be convenient to use the existing 10-base-2 (thinnet, with BNC
connectors) cabling if possible.
But what Wake-On-Lan card supports BNC connectors? I plan to use the
Redhat 6.0 distribution.

Hi Marc,
How are you? I hope you are well. I think you did not say yes to probe all
LUN ID`s. Please make a new kernel and do not forget to say yes in SCSI
section to probe all LUN ID's. This should help you. Have a goodone. Mark

I have the same MB with a k6-2 350, 64M RAM and a SB 64 PCI. I managed to
install the OS with no problems but when it runs, the machine randomly locks up
or reboots with no warning. I use several kernels from 2.0.36 to 2.2.5 and the
same problem persists. I read somewhere in the kernel documentation that the VIA
MVP3 may have problems with some sound cards under linux but when the lockup
arises, no sound is played (but the module is loaded). Any suggestion on how to
identify the problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

good grief, these boxes _are_ old! i remember installing NT 3.1 Beta1 daily
on one these beasts :-)
try to add the line
append="aha152x=0x340,11,7,1"
to your lilo.conf and then run lilo again.
you can also give this as an option to the installer (maybe you have to use
expert mode installation, i'm not sure). these scsi controllers are not
autodetected.

Subject: Linux on Dual Pentium-II machines
Hi,
I am thinking of building a simple dual-processor machine (2 P-II 400Mhz
CPUs). The most challenging task for this machine, if an when built,
would be running some serious number crunching (linux) applications from
mathematical optimization, computational algebra etc.
If some of you out there have built similar machine configurations, I
would
much appreciate if you can share your experiences. A few questions on
on my mind are:
1) On applications (built say, using gcc) that are not designed with
parallel processing in mind, can you get any speed up at all?
2) A P-III 500 Mhz machine from Dell with similar specs costs about the
same as above, and so, is it worth my time to build the dual processor
machine?
3) What are the best places (on the internet or otherwise) to shop for
parts? I looked at www.tcu-inc.com, and they had fairly decent prices
on most items (256MB memory being a notable exception).
I should also mention that I have never "built" (assembled is a more
accurate
term, I guess) a PC before.
Thanks in advance.

I got the same messages when I upgraded from RH5.0 to RH5.2
The problem was in LILO: I did not delete the old LILO from MBR
before upgrading. When you have the new RH already installed,
you cannot delete any more the old LILO. The solution is
to remove the old LILO with the DOS (!!!) undocumented
command fdisk /mbr
After this you have to install the new LILO and probably
you don't get these ugly messages.

Madge has just released linux drivers for their non "true blue" TR cards
on their web site.
- I'm using a PCMCIA Madge card on a RH6.0/Dell Latitude and it works.
Madge have PCI cards so Linux TR hits the PCI bus at last?
I don't like the ibmtr driver that has been available until now(which may
work with certain 100% IBM TR compatible cards)
- it can hang the system with a cable error: the madge driver doesn't.
I don't know if IBM will sudenly release more drivers (also for PCI)
Olicom also have drivers: but the guy who was maintaining them left the
company(?)
- it is also an installation that patches the kernal source which may mean
it ill not work with RH60

Subject: Ping doesn't respond but modem connection on both sides stayed on
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 08:23:44 GMT
I used a linux box as a router, and used a USR Sportster 33.6 modem to
dial to
the University Internet gateway. I use pppd (2.3.7) and chat with the
simple
ppp-on script from the examples that came with pppd. I use RedHat 5.1
with the
2.2.5 kernel.
I'm in charge of one of the faculties in that University. The buildings
are far
apart, and there were no decent network infrastructure nor are there
plans to
install one soon, so we had to use phonelines to connect to the
University's
Internet gateway.
At first there were no problems, except maybe rather frequent
disconnection.
But then the ISP's serial multiport got stung by lightning, and they
replaced
it with a Portmaster, with a linux box as the portslave. And used
another linux
box to implement RADIUS. The modem that we put there (we had to put our
own
modem there) also got roasted. They borrowed us a modem, first a plain
'Rockwell Inside' modem, then they replaced it with a Hayes 33.6 modem
when I
complained (the problem I'm about to mention occurs with both modems). I
tried
putting another Sportster 33.6 there, but it won't work (it can't talk
to the
Portmaster, mysteriously).
Every half hour or so, traffic stopped. Ping doesn't work. But the
modems stay
connected. I mean, CD and all stayed on. I tried fingering the portslave
computer from another building, and the connection counter there still
increments. If I hung up the modem, after the redial the connection
works
again.
I ended up using a cron job to cut the connection every hour or so.
Anybody know what's going on?
Thanks,
Dindit

Hi
A Celeron isn't capable of SMP. You'd have to go into a lot of extra
work in order to get it done. this involves more than just a
