If you are set a 100 tenths, any noise on the line that lasts less
than that time will be ignored, and if longer, the modem will hang up.
It sure can't hurt to run it at 200, just not 255. Sometimes it helps,
sometimes it don't <shrug>

My problems always occur when someone hangs the phone back up. Take it
off hook and leave it, and its no problem, but hang it up, and I am
off most of the time.

Obviously there are more factors, but eliminate one possibility with
the S10 reg.

Good luck,

John

asnswer to that NOPE :( and the route is set proper, I'm more in the
thinking that it is a PCI,PNP,ISA conflict irq usage and such, I've configed
bios to nopnp/os and reserved irq in bois for the card and as I said before
the kernel sees the card and can send data thru it "I've seen the lights go

Ricardo,

What kind of sound card is it? After that, what exactly have you done, to
date, to make it work?

The obvious things to try are:
1. Insure that you have compiled support for the card into your kernel.
2. That said, make sure that the I/O, IRQ, DMA settings are correct.

Sorry to be the master of the obvious, but with nothing to go on, I don't
know where to start.

I had the same problem using a 12.7 Gb, that I solved in this way:
looking into the manifacturer documentation I find that the geomtry of
my HD is 24704,16,63 (C/H/S), I give it at boot with:
lunux hda=24704,16,63
then I used fdisk to partition, it gave me the same overlapping warning,
but someone told me this was because I was using an old version.
Then I installed everything and put the line:
append "hda=24704,16,63"
in lilo.conf and run lilo.
My bios was not capable to provide the right geometry. In this way I can
see all 12.7 Gb and my system is OK, but I'm using only linux on this
disk, if you put also windows probably this will not work (for windows).

Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 2, lun 0
My questions are:
1) should I use /dev/st0 or /dev/nst0 ?
2) I have 2Gb DAT cartridges and a 12Gb HD, there are backup utilities
that can do multivolume backups?
Thank you in advance

The Key Tronic model KB101plus has a switch on the bottom that swaps the
functions of caps lock and control. It's a nice keyboard.

I've found that, believe it or not, the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard works
well as far as placement of the control key goes. Yes, control is in the
same stupid place mode PC keyboards place it, and there is an annoying
caps lock key next to the A, but because of the shape of the keyboard, the
misplaced control key is actually pretty easy to hit. You can easily just
roll your hand a little to the left, and hit control with the side of your
palm. (You might hit shift at the same time, but that doesn't hurt for
control characters). I picked on of these up last weekend, mainly because it
has a dual USB/PS2 interface, and I wanted to buy a USB device to see how well
USB actually works on PCs, but found that the shape really does make typing a
lot less tiring and painful, so replaced my KB101plus, and also went out and
got a second one for use at work.

I asked Zoom about using their modems with linux (prior to my
purchase). Zoom told me not to purchase their PCI dualmode
modem, since it's a winmodem. They said that their ISA dualmode
or their external dualmode modems would be fine with linux. I'm
using the ISA (Model 2919) without a problem.

I have a three-button mouse that works as expected in X. Here is
the mouse part of my XF86Config:

#

# Pointer section

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "MouseSystems"

/dev/mouse is a symbolic link to /dev/cua0, which is same as COM1.

There is a mini-howto on three-button mice.

There are plenty of options, such as buying a REAL modem, like the
USR/3COM Courier modem. It's about $200-$250 almost everywhere. That's a
damn sight more expensive than the $50-$60 a typical Winmodem sells for at

Subject: New CAD System for LinuxPPC
Date: Fri,29 Jan 1999 00:34:22+2000

LinuxPPC is the port of Linux to Apple's Power Macintosh series
of computers.

Recently this new Linux port has acquired important new application:
LinuxCAD.

to learn more about LinuxCAD see:

  http://www.linuxcad.com

LinuxCAD is an AutoCAD for Linux for all practical purposes it implements
all major features of ACAD in a such way that new users ( who had ACAD experience )
do not need any additional training to start working with LinuxCAD.

LinuxCAD is available for Intel x86 and PowerMac Linuxes.
LinuxCAD is a very affordable commercial program
     Intel version - only $99
     LinuxPPC version - only $120

        LinuxCAD v 1.75

includes important additions:

 1. Printing to HPGL compatible plotters ,
 2. Printing DeskJet and LaserJet ,
 3. Printing Postscript
 4. Printing LinuxCAD MS Windows based Print server.
 5. Blocks and Attributes - just like in AutoCAD.
 6. Bezier Splines.
 7. 3D objects and algorythms.

    check and see for yourself:

        http://www.linuxcad.com

The outline of the main features:
 1) LinuxCAD provides great variety of entity types ( lines , circles , ellipses ,
traces , text ,
polylines , solids , doughnuts , arcs , spline curves , user defined entities and 3D
entities ) ,
 2) LinuxCAD implements all necessary editing features ( scale ,
 rotate , mirror , offset , array , copy , move , hatch ... ).
 3) Allows up to 1000 layers, with ability to control layer color and visibility
independently.
 4) All entities are transferable to and from AutoCAD through DXF exchange format.
 5) Supports user defined line types and load able fonts in SHX format.
 6) Supports a hardcopy to printers.
 7) Parts of the drawing can be copied between different instances of the LinuxCAD
using X-Clipboard.
 8) LinuxCAD has industry standard Motif GI.
 9) Allows users to write custom applications for automating typical editing and
drafting tasks
using industry most popular C-compiler GCC.

Consult the BogoMIPS HOWTO before asserting anything much based on
them; all BogoMIPS tell you is how fast a CPU is at doing trivial
loops, and not anything useful about relative speeds of processors.

It is faint encouragement to have someone to blame if the system is
crashing all the time, and you can't get any satisfaction out of MSFT.

Note that I've got a K6-2 266 box that is ticking along fine. AMD had
some problems with Linux with early K6 processors; a memory problem
that they wound up replacing CPUs over. That was about the first time
that a hardware manufacturer started *really* taking Linux seriously
in a way that was meaningful in the marketplace...

Charles,

I have an LS120 (internal, ATAPI) and had little difficulty getting it to work
with kernels older than RH5.2, though I don't use redhat on my system. Getting
it to work involved configuring and rebuilding the kernel with ATAPI floppy
support enabled and adding an entry to my /etc/fstab file (Slackware). I don't
know if redhat ships a kernel with this already supported or if you have to
rebuild it.

If you have a parallel port LS-120 drive, I think there is an option to support
parallel port IDE devices, or something to that effect, which is probably what
you want. I say all this in complete ignorance of what configuration utilities
are provided by redhat. You should probably check you redhat documentation
before doing any of this stuff.

Hope this helps.

Here in comp.os.os2.misc, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Chris Lee)
spake unto us, saying:

This whole thread started because someone was whining about problems
they had encountered with an inexpensive USR modem model that they had
purchased, and in their message they slammed all USR products because
of their unfortunate experience.

It was (rightfully, IMhO) pointed out that not all of USR's modems are
pieces of crap. Some of their products are quite decent, and sweeping
criticism of their entire product line is unwarranted.

HOW in God's name is this "rubbing my choice" in someone's face?

You have an attitude problem. I strongly suggest you get over it.

I have just installed RedHat 5.2 on to new Solo 5150, albeit with help
from Partition Magic 4.0.
I want to use my old notebook as a proxy server on a 10base2 LAN for 3
other computers.
The old one (5 years in Apr) is a Cardstar 3000 - 486DX-33 8MB 120MB
HD - I have run DOS 5.0 6.22 Win3.11 Win95/a without any trouble but
5.2 install does not recognise the HD . Install reports the drive as
CHS 980/15/17 (122MB) and as an ST9145AG. The bios reports the same
CHD and Seagates web site also reports that drive the same.
I have booted off the PM rescue diskette (win98) set and formatted
the partitions :
hda1 ext2 5MB
hda5 ext2 100MB
hda6 linux swap 16.9 MB

all to no avail. Installation stops as soon as I try to edit to mount
a partition. At least the floppy sits there cycling for as long as I
am willing to let it - over 2hrs on one occassion.

When booted off the installation disk I get:
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on 1rq 14. The Partition Check: disk
status errors (0x01 and 0x04) are reported but it gives a reset
success and reports: hda1 hda2 < hda5 hda6>.

I will have to use the CDROM over the LAN from another computer
therefore needing to use the "supplementary" boot disk. The Cardstar
is unusual in having a 2/3 length ISA slot in which I have successfuly
run an EN2000 ethernet card.
Disk Druid reports:
hda1 linux native 4MB
hda5 linux native 99MB
hda6 linux swap 16MB
total 122 with 1 MB free!

Fdisk seems unable to access the drive at all.

The bios set at user type 47, RAM area 0:300.

Bit depressing that the machine has had no trouble with any MS OS.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.
