I had the same problem with a Celron 300a overclocked to 450MHz and a Celron
333a overclocked to 500MHz. Both chips worked fine at the overclocked
speeds in Windows 98 and NT, but would not boot in Linux.

Perhaps the linux OS requires more accuracy than that Microsoft crap!

I think the best price I was was on a Newcom External at Office Max for
just under $70. I wish I would have picked it up, when I was in
Delaware, since there are no OfficMax stores here in MD, and it seems
none of the stoers here carry their externals.

Best price external modem I found around here that is Linux compatiable
is the Zoom (2949 model) for $99 at Office Depot and the guy on the
phone told me there is currently a $20 rebate.

Hi, Chris,
I have an i740 AGP, and what I did to config it was just replace the
normal XF86_SVGA with the X server XBF_i740. Then reconfigure it,
it works well for me.

As for your case, there must be some link problems. Try to run X, xinit, etc.
If using one of them, u will get a 1600*1024, then try to get the path of
that.
Then look to see if startx is also starting from that path.

Hopefully, that will help.

I was reading the "Known problems" section of the Red Hat homepage, and
found something that might address your problem.

http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/rh52-errata-general.html#BootImg

I, too, had this problem, but eventually got the CD.

I do two consecutive dumps to dump my root and /usr partitions, using
the non-rewinding device. I follow this with a rewind and two
consecutive verifies (ie. "restore Cf /dev/nst0". The second verify
fails with error "tape read error: Success". If I do a 3rd verify, it
finds the dump for /usr and completes the verify. What's going wrong?
What do I need to do to get the second restore/verify to start in the
right place? I tried "mt fsf" thinking I needed to skip over the EOF of
the first dump, but that nets the same error when I issue the
restore/verify.

Here's my backup script:

#!/bin/sh
# backup system using dump
# dump just / and /usr
mt -f /dev/tape rewind
dump 0ufB /dev/tape 12000000 /
dump 0ufB /dev/tape 12000000 /usr
mt -f /dev/tape rewind
# verify the root dump
restore Cf /dev/tape
# next restore fails with "Success"!
restore Cf /dev/tape
# next restore finds the /usr dump
restore Cf /dev/tape

/dev/tape is a symbolic link to /dev/nst0, my HP 12/24gb SCSI DAT.

I have a brand new Dell Dimension XPS R400 that refuses to cooperate
with Caldera OpenLinux. It has an ATI XPERT 98D AGP video card that
isn't supported when I run XF86Setup. I can't even get it working with
a generic Mach64 setting.
Linux also won't detect my network card, which is a 3Com Fast EtherLink
XL 10/100Mb Tx (3C905B). Does anyone know of any web sites that I can
dig up some information on this? Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a no-name soundcard with an ALS-100 chip working in a Debian2 box.
Treat it as a SB16 clone, configure the kernel as if it was a SB16. Here's
the SOUND section from my .config:

#
# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=m
# CONFIG_PAS is not set
CONFIG_SB=y
# CONFIG_ADLIB is not set
# CONFIG_GUS is not set
# CONFIG_MPU401 is not set
# CONFIG_UART6850 is not set
# CONFIG_PSS is not set
# CONFIG_GUS16 is not set
# CONFIG_GUSMAX is not set
# CONFIG_MSS is not set
# CONFIG_SSCAPE is not set
# CONFIG_TRIX is not set
# CONFIG_MAD16 is not set
# CONFIG_CS4232 is not set
# CONFIG_MAUI is not set
CONFIG_AUDIO=y
CONFIG_MIDI=y
# CONFIG_YM3812 is not set
SBC_BASE=220
SBC_IRQ=5
SBC_DMA=1
SB_DMA2=5
SB_MPU_BASE=0
SB_MPU_IRQ=-1
DSP_BUFFSIZE=65536
# CONFIG_LOWLEVEL_SOUND is not set

Oh yeah, if your card is PnP you'll need to use isapnptools to configure it. In this
case you'll also need to compile sound as a module and install it after isapnp has
done its thing.

Ya, Hummingbird Communications has been doing this for awhile. Its fair, but no where
compares to the Linux OS. Linux X11 emulating a MS environment is more
stable than MS Windows emulating a X11 Linux environment. NT crashes (BSOD) too much
when pushed by heavy apps.

Hi,

I have just successfuly installed my sound card (ESS1689 on RH5.2 / 2.0.36)!!! In
addition to the "100% SB" module I also loaded the Generic OPL3 and V-MIDI as
modules during kernel recompile and can happily "modprobe -a .." them all by
mimicking /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/ESS1868 but I am unsure of the proper
syntax for use in conf.modules. HOW-TOs seem a bit thin on the ground.

All help gratefully appreciated.

Subject: Newbie Install Problems
Date: Tue, 02 Feb 1999 14:43:25 -0500

I recently tried to install the Debian OS(Linux) on a 25MHz 486 based (EISA
bus)system. It has an NEC disk drive(EIDE;2GB; new, no os installed.), and an
SIIG serial/floppy/EIDE ISA controller with its own BIOS.

I initially tried to install to a 500MB partition. When it tried to find bad
blocks in the partition(read-only) it would hang up and need to be rebooted.
Eventually, it passed this test, but, when the install tried to copy to this
partition it failed with numerous references to freelist size problems(fext2
type file system).

I cut the partition down to 50MB. The file system was created and the base os
was successfully installed on the 2nd try. The system now boots the os and
appears to be stable.

I don't know for sure what went wrong here; if anyone can explain this please
do(kernel/hardware mismatch?).

I suspect that the hard drive needs to be low-level formatted. Is there a Linux
utility or "package" that can do this type of format?

When the os boots, it displays two indentical error messages. One is from
eata-dma the other is from eata-???(Sorry about the lack of detail. I'm doing
this from memory.). The messages complain that the BIOS does not have the DOS32
extensions that these drivers "still" need.

Questions: Can someone explain what functionality I am losing by not having
these DOS32 extensions? Will this, eventually, be a problem? and What, if
anything, can I do about it?

Thanks in Advance,
Al Votolato

My comments are my own, not those of my employer.

Is your QIC02 card found at bootup ? If so, reading and writing
files from/onto the tape can be done with "tar" or "taper" .
The drive should be addressed as /dev/tpqic150 .

You can't mount it that way, though there is a tool out there
which would allow addressing the tape just like any other HD partition.
