Hi folks,

has anybody experiences with Linux on a Toshiba Portege 7010?
I wonder if there are problems with the CD Rom drive because it's only in
the docking station.
Does the internal modem work?

There are a lot of questions. Perhaps somebody is willing to help me and
the other readers.

Thank you very much

Hi,

Anybody knows where to get the Intel i740 video card Linux driver and/or
which video card models already have a driver for Linux ?

Thanks.

I assume you want to run X-Windows.... try the XBFii740 server at
ftp.redhat.com

What is the difference between the two? We run the FEA app EMRC/NISA Display 3
v8.0 with Exceed 6.01 which is a Unix app. Just curious about the differences
between the term "environment" and "emulator". We also have programmers doing
some development using Exceed.

Subject: ATI RAGE PRO LT & X Windows
Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 12:49:22 +0000

hi

i have been trying to get X working on my AJP 989 notebook which uses
the ATI RAGE PRO LT chipset, but unfortunately I do not seem to get it
up an running.
I have come across a few sites which mention the above chip set,
foremostely
 http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/#xserver, but installing
the 2.2.1
kernel does not seem to be an easy option. i haven't tried that yet,
but i guess it is
the only way to use my notebook with linux at all .
the other option would be to purchase a commercial X server from Xi
Graphics. the
problem there is that i cannot quite see whether i am supposed to get
the ordinary
Accelerated-X Display server or the one for laptops. their web site
(www.xig.com)
suggests that the server for laptops supports the above graphics chip,
whereas the ordinary one
does not. if necessary i would be prepared to buy the ordinary server
for about $100, the
laptop version however costs $250 which seems a bit much.

to summarise the above,

  (1) has anybody managed to get X windows running on the ATI RAGE PRO
LT chip
without first installing the 2.2.2 kernel and using XF86 ?
  (2) if the Xi server is the only option, does the ordinary desktop
version of the Accelerated-X
display server support the LT chip ?

thanks for any comments in advance,

carsten

Hallo to everybody!

I have a Microtek Scanmaker X6 Scanner, which works perfectly under OS2
and Win95.

SANE identifies my microtek Scanner alright. LILO identifies OK the
Scanner on IRQ 11, and with "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" the scanner appears
OK.
Though, when l start scanimage or xscanimage and try to scan or preview
a scan, then the scanner device makes a short, strange noise, and does
not scan!

CHMOD 777 ... tried already, so there must be something alse.

Thank you in advance.

Although X-Windows is specific to Unix, Exceed is just a port of the
Unix X-WIndows server to the NT Os and runs natively (in other
words was compiled with Msoft tools and API's) vs. interix which would
run a shell within NT so that Unix apps could run within it. Of course
the Unix apps would have to be recompiled if they are static vs. dynamic
with respect to the libraries. The reason is, is that their stuff can
be considered a dynamic library that maps Unix OS API calls to NT OS
API calls, thus making the OS transparent to the Unix app.
So I guess in summary their stuff acts like a Uni emulator within Windows
by either or both providing a dynamic library/API mapping s/w package
and a shell that traps or allows Unix to run within its own environment.

Hi

I'm trying to get my new modem working with linux. I've followed the
ppp-howto and when I type "ppp-on" the modem calls and stuff(Makes all
kinda sounds -- just like it should).
But then nothing happens! -- and it times out. I can't telnet or ping --
it won't recognize any host. And if I type /sbin/ifconfig it shows
nothing... no lo or ppp or nothing. I think this is the problem. So my
question is: how is the network supposed to be set up before using ppp?.
The thing is I used to be connected to a network and then I moved? and I
can't remember how to cange things back to how they were before!.

: Maybe. I have a LJ 4P and was unable to get it to work with the older
: ghostscript; upgraded to 5.50-2 (I think) from the wisc.edu website.
: ljet4 still doesn't work (just prints garbage and smudges); laserjet works

: the 5.50-1 fonts rpm.

: Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, the existence of a driver doesn't imply that it will
work well. I'm using the uniprint driver for an Epson Stylus Color
640. Output is definitely inferior to that produced under Win95.
However, it works and is usable. As for the LJ 4P, I have no idea.

Good luck.

No, you are absolutely right. I would DREAD having to change ISP's for
all the reasons you mention. However, if they were late to support new
standards, I would start looking elsewhere. You could use a service
like HOTMAIL if you wanted the freedom of changing ISP's without
changing E-Mail address. I'm glad I chose the ISP that I did. I would
very disappointed if they were slow to adopt new standards. That is
why I was so careful in choosing my ISP in the first place. I did not
simply shop the cheapest I could find. You often get what you pay for
(and don't get what you don't pay for). I pay $19 a month for my ISP.
It is not the cheapest around, but certainly worth the extra 4 or 5
dollars a month for the superior service.
