Hi,

I don't know about the Deluxe version, but the version I had stuffed up my
master boot record, such that I had to reinstall FreeBSD on my second HD. It
kept giving me a "no bootable partition" error message. I gave up trying to use
it and went back to the "booteasy" programme that comes with FreeBSD.

If you're doing a completely nre installation of FreeBSD or Linux then give SC a
go, otherwise beware!!

Hello,
I am searching for multiport ethernet cards supported by linux. Does
anywhere know some cards?

I have such a modem, though I do not yet have linux (only win 95 osr1). I
am pretty sure it is not a winmodem, although the last v90 firmware may be
win dependent in some way.

I have had problems when connecting to Livinston systems - sudden
non-responsivenness that requires power-on reset, but it works well with
Ascend or USR ISP equipment.

Thanks for the warning for when i get around to intalling Linux.

I had the same problem running at 100MB/s. I had to run the 3COM
diagnostic in WIn95 to set the Duplex to FULL which then sets the
MEDIA TYPE to 100BASE-TX(100Mb/s). There is also a LINUX utility for
3COM cards you can get at

Hi to all. I'm really worry about the following problem

I'm using Slackware 3.2 (kernel 2.0.29) on a Pentium 166 with 256Mb
of memory (2*168Mb DIMM's, EDO 100MHz, TX Motherboard), recently
updated froom 64Mb.

The problem is that I'm loosing memory when I compile a FORTRAN
application. Before the first compilation the output of the
"free" command is:

cthulhu:~# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 255588 30660 224928 23108 1636 16220
-/+ buffers: 12804 242784
Swap: 32252 0 32252

The following table shows the "used" and "free" memory, according to the

"free" command, after a sequence of compilations of the same
application (Absoft FORTRAN 77 compiler)

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 255588 57660 197928 23112 22052 21432

Mem: 255588 124800 130788 23196 83108 23300

Mem: 255588 189820 65768 22844 144036 23448
Mem: 255588 211528 44060 22844 164388 23448
Mem: 255588 233168 22420 22844 184676 23448
Mem: 255588 249708 5880 22552 200952 22544
Mem: 255588 249708 5880 22552 200020 23448
Mem: 255588 249708 5880 22552 200020 23448

It seems that, after each compilation, more than 20Mb of memory are
lost, till the free memory is 5880Kb, when the memory drop stops.
To complicate the situation, after this sequence of compilations
I started four Netscape's and then I kill them: after this operation
the memory state was:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 255588 241744 13844 22580 190832 23532
                             -----
So, it seems that starting and exiting several applications the system
recovered about 8000Kb. I don't understand nothing!!!!

If you see the existing processes with "ps -aux" after each compilation,

they are the always same, and, after the information provided by the
command "ps -aux", the total memory used by this processes is always the

same and are significantively below the value of used memory shown by
the command "free".

Please, HELP ME !!!!!

Thanks in advance.

Javier

Does anynoe have experience with linux and heavy loads? Especially with
oracle? We currently have two oracle servers. Our main box is a HP/UX
RISC box that supports ~70 users and averages a load of ~6 and has long
periods( >1hr) of loads above 10. Our linux box is used currently for
special projects, but we would like to move more mission critical tasks to
it. Our current box is a dual PII with SCSI drives. How well do Xeon
boxes handle heavy loads? Any testimonials would be great, oracle related
or not.

Thanks,
Daniel

Yep, just make a symlink to somewhere else. I did the same thing for my
WordPerfect install, I pointed /opt to /usr/local/opt, because I had plenty
of room there. I think this is covered in the RH install guide, actually.

Read up: man ln :-)

Exceed is simply an X windowing evironment for Windows, it is hardly an

Hi Richard,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I did compile ext2 into my kernel
and it wasn't a module.

Subject: TAPE DAT usage

I'd like to have an advice on how-to-use a DAT drive.
It's listed as ARCHIVE Phyton 27871-xxx by SCSI Bios but I haven't any
technical documentation.

I'd like to backup my hard disks using afio.

Does some know where I could find a good tutorial about using tape ? The
ftape howto isn't so much helpful.
Thanks in advance
