I have a SupraExpress56i that uses IRQ 11 and it works! What you have to do
is set your modem to the proper Com then from the command line type
setserial /dev/modem irq 9.

IIRC what you need to do is get Ghostscript and set it up as a BJC-600.
Haven't done it yet myself (friend of mine that I'm helping has that
model printer) but another person I know says that's what he did to get
a 4300 working.

I can verify that you do *not* need DOS to install Linux. My computer
was built by me from pieces I purchased seperately. The HD was
completely blank. Slackware 3.4 installed no problem. As others have
mentioned, fdisk (I used the Linux fdisk) may need to be used to set the
partition as bootable.

Yes... in a way. I just configured my work linux box and my laptop to
use the HP2000C we have at work. As follows......:
Under RedHat 5.2:
At the prompt type "printtool"
Click on [Add] --> Pick the type of connection you have to the printer
("Local Printer" == parallel connection, "Remote Unix..." == TCP/IP
connection (on your lan), the rest are pretty obvious) --> [Ok] --> [Ok]
--> Check the entries in this window for your setup (if a networked
printer give the printer name or IP address) --> [Select] --> For
"Printer Type" choose "HP Deskjet 550C/560C/6xxC series" --> In "Color
Depth" choose "32..." --> Check "Fix stair-steppin..." --> Uncheck "Fast
text..." --> [Ok] --> [Ok] --> [lpd] --> [Restart lpd] --> Pick your new
entry for the printer --> [Tests] --> "Print Postscript test page"
......
Wait a minute or so.... if everything works enjoy your new printer, if
not, let me know.
Whole thing should take about two minutes start to finish, no reboots,
no fiddling around downloading drivers, just click...click....click and
go.
Note: The above settings work fine for me... your mileage may vary.

Hi
I have bumped into a problem with my HPLJ6L and Slackware 3.5.
Everything works ok the first time I print. I get the following output
on the paper:
(Figure 1)
Line one
Line two
That's ok (since I don't use any filter)
But if I print one more time I get:
(Figure 2)
Line one
Line two
The printer somehow remembers it's last position and the next printing
starts from it. It doesn't help if I restart the computer. The only way
(which I've discovered) to start from the left margin again is to
restart the computer into Windows 98 and print a document. Then I can
start from fig 1 again.
Anyone knows what wrong?
Any ideas?
I have read all HOW-TO and man pages I've found, but I can't find a
solution.
thanks
tom

Hmmm... I was running a Kingston and some Netgears through a US Robotics
switch and getting 200mb (100mb full duplex) with nothing specialon the
same setup. I didn't even have the options set. Still working with the
2.2.0p6 kernel and no updates. I'm not sure what you're problem is...
I'd suggest booting dos and using the setup disk to check things out.
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the card is forced to 10mb.

I'm thinking about buying a HP 1100 laser printer for my Linux box. I
heard the printer works great with ghostscript.
The only think that bugs me about this printer is the lack of buttons to
select printer functions. Does this printer require software to take full
advantage of it, or can we get buy under linux?
Advise from HP 1100 users would be greatly appreciated.

This motherboard has a SiS 5598 card in it on board. The card has been
configured with 4MB of Ram allocated from the dynamic ram pool.
However,
Superprobe returns that the card has no RAM what-so-ever. And it cannot
even tell me what it thinks the card is. The only two xconfigurations that
I can use at all are mono and vga16. This is of course not acceptable. If
anyone can tell me what I need to do to get a x driver for this machine, I

I have successfully run X in Solaris x86 with full video capabilities, I
hope to do the same with linux.

just put together a quick & cheap linux box based around a Tekram P5MVP-B4 baby AT
motherboard + AMD K6 350mhz cpu + SuSE 5.3. The disk set up is SCSI only - using an
old adaptec AHA 1542b on one of the boards ISA slots (could this be significant?).
Problem is that linux only runs with the L2 cache disabled (from the boards bios)!!
When the cache is enabled the whole box goes dead just after LILO kicks in !
Any ideas of the problem and fixes ?

BTW: The USB bandwidth is approx. 1.5 MBit per sec and 8 bits making 1

Linux (and all unixes that I know of) terminate lines using a newline
character. On linux, this performs a carriage return/linefeed.
Your printer does not know about newlines, and just interprets it as
a linefeed. Since there is no carriage return, it does not go back
to the beginning of the line.

Print a carriage return, known in c as a \r.
Using some filter on lpr will solve your problem.

I cannot be very sure if my prescription will work for you - I am new to Linux,
and what
I know about A50 I discovered by trials and errors. I apologize if it won't
help much.
But, anyway...
As I wrote, there are two options in the "Device" section to switch
acceleration off:
Option "no_accel"
Option "no_bitblt"
When I used only the first of these two I got some progress (initially I had
black screen
with a mouse pointer on it). But what I got was far from being usefull. The
second option
gave me what I have now - two reasonably good modes.
As far as your mouse pointer is concerned, I had similar thing. It was cured as
soon as I
specified mouse protocol correctly (I have ps/2 mouse, but I told xconfig
something else. Don't ask me why ...)
That is almost all what I have 'learned' from my struggle with X.
I have ABIT motherboard and Amptron CS17 monitor. If you want I can send you a
copy of XF86Config file and specify my hardware more accurately.
Please, write me about your progress. (I would love to get better video if I
could).
Good luck.
Alex Rozhkov.

Your wife couldn't care less if your modem was plug and play, as long
as it worked (I'm betting) and in that case, I say remove it from the
win98 setup in the system config, and then remove it and set it to
non-plug and play, [probably on the standard COM 2), but
CAUTION--DISABLE YOUR MOTHERBOARD COM2 BEFORE BOOTING BACK TO Win98 OR
Linux OR IT WILL PROBABLY LOCK UP ON YOU!!!
Reboot to Win98, and re-install it at the COM port that you gave it,
and Voilla! you now have a fully functional modem again, but not one
that you can't locate in any OS.
