I doubt if there's any user servicable parts inside.

Well, I still want to be able to paste so I can't simply do away with the
function altogether. For some quirky reason XFree86 isn't able to retain
three button emulation (by clicking the left and right buttons simulatenously)
AND be able to use the wheel at the same time. That would be the ideal
solution.

Subject: Kernel 2.2 and 3Com 3c900 support
Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 12:20:06 -0600

I recently compiled and installed the 2.2 kernel on my linux box. However,
after doing this, I no longer have networking capabilities. When the kernel
gets to connecting to the network via DHCP, it can't do it -- "failed" is
the response.
I was told to get the newest dhcpcd version and install that and it
would remedy the problem. I tried this and downloaded the latest I could
find - version .7 - Is this the version I want? In addition, the make
refuses to compile - I get tons of compiling warnings where there are
duplicate variables defined between my /usr/include files and their twins in
the /usr/src/linux directory (which is
where the 2.2 kernel code resides). Have I forgotten something? Is there
some simple thing I'm missing (I hope). If you have any insights, I would
*greatly* appreciate it.

    Thanks,
        Derek Ruths

"user servicable" usually means nice, neat screwdriver adjustments. By
adjust,
I mean use pliers, hammer, file, glue, shims, blowtorch, etc to make the
#%@
thing work the way _you_ think it should. :-)

(It'd probably be easier to look into buying a new mouse. )

Yah, but what if every reader of this newsgroup flamed it with a 63
line response like yours? Does that mean you shouldn't flame it?
Sounds like the same argument. I suspect it doesn't much matter
either way. In fact, you and I both know that there's only a few
spammers and only a few flamers. And the number of flames has
nothing to do with the number of spams.

Anyway, nice page there at http://www.zip.com.au/~erikd/lcad.html

That probably has some effect on the number of spams.

The Linux Gazette article (similar to

The Hauppauge Wincast TV runs for $60.00 at officemax.

Don't bother with getting the stereo card. Stereo will probably never
be supported. American NTSC television uses a completely different
method of encoding stereo sound compared to those used in Europe.
Since there are not many American NTSC stations in Europe running MTS
stereo, and stereo encoders are extremely expensive due to patents on
DBX compression, the bttv driver developers can't easily develop the
code needed to support it.

However, the panasonic site doesn't have much to say about it. Do I need a

Who has one of these? What do you think of it? Does it work well with

I have a etower 300k (AMD K2-300) installed with Red Hat 5.2. My friend has two or
three installed...
My strategy was to get the hardware configured under Win98 and then install Linux.
Before installing Linux on my emachine,
I needed to pull the modem and the sound cards because there was a shortage of
IRQ's. I then
installed two network cards and got them working under Win98. My friend installed
Linux.
We had trouble with the system recognizing one of the network cards so we turned
scripted it to
turn on after booting. We're using the system as a router/firewall/proxy/web
server.

The only problems with the e-machine is that it has locked up hard, so hard that I
had to unplug it to re-boot, 4 times in the last 2 weeks.
and the fan makes a very loud sound for 15 seconds when the box is bumped. My
friend's first machine had a bad cd-rom drive.

Still having trouble getting X to work with anything other than the VGA style
adapter.
Any success stories with X & emachine?

I'd recommend getting the $1.50 Cheapbytes CDROM of Redhat 5.2 from

Very good installation documentation in HTML format on the CDROM too.

Grep around under /usr/scr/linux and see what you can find on

Just curious Eric.... How do you derive that the SupraExpress is a
Winmodem from it's minimum requirements? The SupraExpress (not to be
confused with the SupraMax) is NOT a Winmodem and, as you can tell from
the fact that it works in Win 3.1, does not require a plug & pray

Hello Anthony,

This is only a wild stab in the dark, but this _might_ be an IRQ problem.
The first controller should be IRQ 14, the second IRQ 15. I think you
check IRQ's byright clicking on my computer and selecting properties (it's
been very long time since I ran that OS, so you'll have to excuse me). If
it turns out it has something that catches your attention on the second
IDE controller tab, chances are it's something to do with IRQ's. You'll
probably have to mess with your BIOS to fix that up (see motherboard
manual....). Anything else I would say would be pure speculation- you
should check that the cdrom drive's jumpers have correct setting (some
hard drives require jumper in one plkace if sole drive on controller,
another if it's the master and there's a slave drive- maybe CDROM's are
like that too).

I hope my wild speculations help you out some....

XF86setup is also much easier to use, it is graphically and you can

Another thought - my roomate had a problem with his machine locking up after a few
minutes of q2, figured out it was a heat problem. He solved the problem by taking
the cover off his case, then pointed a floor-fan (yup, one of those two-foot
diameter ones) right at the motherboard, voila! I'm not saying this is your
problem, but it would at least heat as the culprit if you still crashed.

Hey Caleb,

This is a wild-assed guess, so take it with a grain of salt. Since cat'ing
audio to the sound devices works ok, I am assuming that the kernel is ok. When
you compiled kernel, did you check all the appropriate support MIDI, etc
stuff? That might be one thing to check out. If it's not that, it could be that
the particular mp3 player you are using is (for some reason) geeking out on
you. Try recompiling it and see what happens.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Hope the speculation is useful.
